Under The Tents: Kidrobot, The Expanse, VIZ Media Pokémon, Geeky Hooker, Kotobukiya, Shout! Factory

We are now double-digit days away from San Diego Comic-Con 2016 (97, to be precise). That means that we’re only a few weeks away from panel confirmations, and big news has already started to roll out (have you checked out Hallmark’s awesome exclusives yet?).

In today’s edition of Under the Tents, we’ve rounded up a ton of other really cool con news for you, including a Kidrobot SDCC debut, news on how you can meet the brains behind Pokémon, lots of crocheted critters, word on the odds of The Expanse being at the con this year, and so much more.

Here’s a look at the news you might have missed:

  • The Geeky Hooker, the self proclaimed crochet ninja, revealed two “critters” that will be debuting at SDCC. The two yarn creations consist of DC favorites Batman and Superman inspired the recent Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice film.

  • Geeky Hooker also tweeted out a look at more critters ready for SDCC which includes Deadpool.

  • Popular figure creators Kidrobot recently announced a collaboration with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts that will see produced works from Kidrobot inspired by the late Andy Warhol. The collaboration will come in various forms such as the well known Dunny, plushes, and blind box collectables. The first wave in the new line will debut at SDCC this July.

  • SDCC exclusives news is starting to pick up and so do the teasers for upcoming exclusives. The latest exclusive tease comes from NECA, manufacturer of actions figures from movies, video games, and more. According to a recent tweet from their official Twitter account, it sounds like they have some big things planned for attendees this year. Keep an eye on our blog for more information about NECA and exclusives as news is released.

  • Felix Comic Art, which represents various artists, tweeted out a sketch by artist Gary Brown from Emerald City Comic Con, and revealed he will also be attending SDCC. Brown will be accepting commissions for San Diego Comic-Con as well.

  • Artist Terry Moore recently told Bleeding Cool that “he has a new project that he will be announcing at San Diego”. You can read the full article at Bleeding Cool.
  • In addition to Pokémon Adventures creators Hidenori Kusaka and Satoshi Yamamoto’s upcoming appearance at San Diego Comic-Con as special guests, VIZ Media also announced that the duo “will meet fans at the VIZ Media booth for signings and participate on a Pokémon panel alongside VIZ Media editors”. They also promise that “other exciting Pokemon activities will be detailed soon”. Excited yet?

  • Popular high-end statue maker Kotobukiya is going to have some exciting things at SDCC this year. A representative for the company recently commented on StatueForum.com that attendees can look forward to new Fine Art Statue reveals at the convention, including pieces from their Marvel line.
  • Artist and writer See One revealed on Instagram that his comic book adventure series, The Adventures of Miru, will be launching at SDCC this year.

  • Artist Steven E. Gordon is planning another exclusive metallic print at this year’s con, and he’s currently taking suggestions on Facebook.
  • Shout! Factory confirmed on Twitter that while they’ll be back at SDCC this year, they won’t have Ninja Sentai Kakuranger: The Complete Series with them. So if you want it, make sure you pre-order now.

  • As if you weren’t excited enough about Syfy’s announcement yesterday that they’ll be taping a live show San Diego Comic-Con (and you can attend!), co-writer of The Expanse, Daniel Abraham, had this to say about the news: “If you can’t make #TheExpanse panel at SDCC this year, you can still make #TheExpanse panel at SDCC this year.” While panel confirmations haven’t officially gone out yet, The Expanse is a big hit for Syfy, and it sounds like it’s essentially a lock to get another panel this year.
