Please welcome blog reader and now guest blogger for the site, Megan Gotch. Megan wrote up a post about all the great swag she received at this year’s Comic-Con, so I asked her if we could repost here – good thing she said yes!

Megan is a photographer and San Diego resident who has been attending Comic-Con for the past three years. She loves Futurama, SDCC, Firefly, Being Human and “all things celebrity”. You can follower her on Twitter at @megangotch or her blog at http://megangotch.blogspot.com/.

I MISS COMIC CON!!! So much so that I had to blog about it one more time! I got so much awesome swag this year that just gets put where no one can see it, so I want to share it with you all!!!

It is hard to pick a FAVORITE thing, but it just might have to be my mockingjay pin from the Lionsgate booth. It is heavy and made of real metal, it is super nice! VERY hard to acquire so I am quite proud of it, EVERYONE was asking me to trade them for something, but NO this was my badge of honor! Also was happy to get the Being Human buttons and the Breaking Dawn buttons, they had the SDCC logo, which makes them even more special!

I pride myself on being a Nerd! So was happy to get a Nerd HQ lanyard and bracelet while visiting them for the Nathan Fillion panel. Both are on display in my Nerd Mobile (car:))

I got a BUNCH of Phineas & Ferb stuff this year…LOVE THAT SHOW! Buttons and a mouse pad, 3 backpacks and not pictured is the poster for their new movie.

The Conan Museum of Art had to have the best OVERALL swag! I got oven mitts, buttons, T-shirt and posters. And the T-shirt was actually in my size so I was able to wear it the next day to the con!…..WHEN….

I was able to meet the cast of Being Human…just wanted to share my favorite moment EVER again!!:)

I already have a bag addiction, purses, shopping bags, reusable bags, so SDCC is not condusive to that addiction. They give out bags there like candy! And with my addiction I will take any bag I can get. Was supper excited to again this year get my Dexter bag, better than last year, but not better than the 1st year. LOVE the WB swag bag they give away at check it, this year it was a back pack and it was perfect! Wearing it like a messenger bag was too long for me! The P&F bags were great! so CUTE used mine all SDCC. And the Pan Am bag, SUPER popular, was GREAT quality messenger bag, my Dad scored to different style of those bags.

My favorite thing I paid for was my Futurama stuff! Nothing can beat the 1st year we attended SDCC and their Futurama exclusive, but this years were pretty cool too. The Bender is adorable. We also ordered the Robot Devil plush and Destructor figure which is going to be pretty big! I was happily surprised by the calender this year…last years was EH! But this year is all the character have their own magazine cover spoof. Really like when they get creative with the calendar instead of just reusing old pictures. And was able to get the new comic!

This past week have been sad that it is over, but was so happy to be able to attend and have the best SDCC of the 3 years I have been going,…of course can’t wait till next year!

Color us surprised when we didn’t see a Cartoon Network booth or events during the Comic-Con 2011 announcement season. Adult Swim seems to be taking on a life of its own at the con, but for great family fare it looked like it was going to be orphaned to its parent, Warner Bros.

Well, worry no more, because there will be a Cartoon Network booth. Sort of.

Between the time the convention center doors close on Saturday and reopen on Sunday, the Warner Bros. booth will be transformed, or rather “tooned up” into the official Cartoon Network booth for Family Day. The day’s events will feature signings from your favorite CN shows, the Tweety Bird car give-a-way, costumed characters for the kids, and more fun for kids of all ages. And you betcha you’ll catch us at the Scooby-Doo signing – man, we love that show.

Hope they use something a little more snazzy than that black and white from last year. Click past the jump to read the press release.

WARNER BROS. BOOTH WILL GET FAMILY DAY “TOON UP”
COURTESY OF CARTOON NETWORK
SUNDAY, JULY 24 AT COMIC-CON 2011

BURBANK, Calif. (July 15, 2011) — Sunday is family day at Comic-Con, and this year for the first time, Warner Bros. Entertainment will partner with Time Warner sister company Cartoon Network on a daylong “booth takeover” initiative. On Sunday, July 24, at Comic-Con International: San Diego, the Warner Bros. booth — with its distinctive 30-foot tall replica of the iconic Warner Bros. water tower — will transform overnight into the Cartoon Network booth to create a fun, family friendly environment designed just for kids.

In celebration of family day, Cartoon Network and Warner Bros. will present a day’s worth of kid-friendly events at the booth, including:

Signings by stars and creators from “Regular Show,” “Adventure Time,” “The Looney Tunes Show,” “Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated” and “Young Justice”

The return of last year’s smash success kids’ Dance Party, featuring costumed characters like Scooby-Doo and Bugs Bunny. For 2011, dance party revelers will show off their hottest moves on a custom-made Liquid Fusion floor, allowing them to walk on water! (Figuratively, of course.)

Live demonstrations by cartoonists and other artists, including iconic “MAD” illustrator Sergio Aragones

One-of-a-kind giveaways and premiums from Cartoon Network and Warner Bros. Animation, including the live giveaway of the Tweety car

And more!

Thirty-five workers will work over 500 combined hours to engineer a Cartoon Network rebrand of the 3,600-square-foot Warner Bros. booth, literally overnight, hanging all-new banners and booth signage to create an all-new environment.

alt="" width="275" height="183" />

The “Countdown to Comic-Con” continues, with a mere four days until Preview Night! We can hardly believe it ourselves, and we can’t wait to be on that jumbo jet, San Diego bound.

The folks at Comic-Con International, organizers for the big show, can’t wait to see all of us either, and they’ve been unveiling news and schedules on a daily basis leading up to the con which have been making the wait to opening night just that much more unbearable. Thanks, CCI. We appreciate the tease!

The latest batch of updates contain things for fans and artists alike. For all the otaku attending, check out the all-night Anime screening schedule held annually in the Marriott Marquis & Marina. For cinema buffs and future filmmakers, be sure to drop in the Comic-Con Independent Film Festival, which is also in the Marriott Marquis & Marina hotel. For Family Day on Sunday, treat your kids to short films for all ages at the Comic-Con International Children’s Film Festival in room 9 of the convention center

For artists trying to break into the industry, make sure you sign up for a Portfolio Review and get your art critiqued by industry professionals and get answers to your questions on how to take it to the next level.

But the one thing that makes Comic-Con so cool is the accessibility of celebrities. Whether you catch them wandering the show floor, guesting at an exhibitor booth, or the personal touch of an autograph session, nothing makes attendees more excited than to exchange a few words of praise with their favorite stars of the page or screen.

That’s why the unveiling of the autograph schedule for Sails Pavilion has most of us jumping up and down with anticipation for next week. You’re sure to find someone worth the wait in line, as the list of celebrities attending is pretty extensive. Check out the schedule and find out when and where you have to be in order to snag a Comic-Con moment to remember. A word: Many exhibitors are holding their own autograph schedules, such as Warner Bros. and Dark Horse. Check the individual exhibitor schedules for these autograph events.

It seems as if CCI is having trouble getting these new schedules added to the MySCHED app, so if you are using that to organize your weekend, be patient! They will update everyone via Twitter and Facebook, and of course we’ll retweet as soon as we see that it’s been fixed.

Okay, let us get all sentimental for a second. Comic-Con isn’t just big Hollywood events. it’s about comics, too – let’s not forget that. And Comic-Con has lots of comic publishers and creators, from the mega-popular to the ultra-obscure. Somewhere in the middle is one of my favorite comic book companies, BOOM! Studios. Being a father, BOOM!’s kids line of books, now under the KABOOM! label, has the perfect lineup to start my children reading comics at an early age. And their classic Disney licenses, like Darkwing Duck, Ducktales, and Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, to the recently acquired Peanuts comics, speak to the kid in me as I’m able to share my childhood delights with my children.

So last year, the first booth I visited was BOOM!’s, and had Travis Hill sketch me a custom Toy Story cover. I have this framed in my son’s bedroom. And everytime I see it, I get such joy out of being able to share something I love with my kids.

BOOM! Studios announced their booth schedule for Comic-Con 2011, and I couldn’t be more excited. Again, they have a signing and panel schedule that speaks to both the adult and kid in me. Personally, I couldn’t be more excited to see that Warren Spector, the famed video game designer who brought us such games as Deus Ex and Epic Mickey, at the booth supporting his Ducktales comics for the publisher. They also have a great lineup of Comic-Con exclusive variants, such as the aforementioned Ducktales, Planet of the Apes, and a Definitive Irredeemable Vol. 1 exclusive, signed and numbered by Mark Waid.

Thank you, BOOM! Click past the jump to see the entire line-up.

Warner Bros. has announced their autograph schedule for this year’s Comic-Con, and as in years past it’s pretty massive. We applaud them for embracing the fans and giving them a chance to shake hands with their favorite stars of film and television.

Last year, the autograph schedule brought massive chaos in and around the WB booth on the show floor, causing entire walkways to be shut down and basically rendered an entire corner of the floor inaccessible. WB also used their Twitter account to announce when folks could start to line up at their booth, just for a chance to get an autograph at a particular session. In other words, it wasn’t a very good system.

Thankfully, we won’t have to worry about that again this year, because they have revamped the ticketing system. Gone are the impromptu announcements via Twitter, each session will now have a set time when people can start to line up for a chance. Also gone are the long lines at the booth for said tickets, because they’ve moved it to the much more accessible Sails Pavilion.

BioWare Senior Community Coordinator David Bass posted the news on the game’s official forums:

Yesterday, BioWare made an announcement that we have a space at the Hilton Gaslamp hotel across the street from Comic-Con where fans can get their hands on Mass Effect 3 and the newest Dragon Age II DLC. Well, surprisingly enough, The Old Republic is planning on being there as well! Anyone (yes, even you!) can come to the Hilton and wait in line to play any of the BioWare games.

Those of you who have Comic-Con badges, never fear. We will definitely have the game playable on the show floor too, but as we’ve always said, our goal is to get as many people playing as possible at these events, and we figured the best way to do that was to extend the experience outside of Comic-Con.

And later when asked for more specifics on dates and times the game would be open to play, he posted this response:

The current plan is for the space to be open during each day of Comic-Con, likely extending beyond show floor hours too. Plans are very much subject to change, however. And we may not have played all of our cards just yet.

This is great news for fans of the long-awaited game, whether you were able to score a ticket to the con or not. Keep watching for more information as it is announced.

Yup, rumors have been floating around for a while but the LA Times just made it official. Marvel will sit out Hall H this year. It sort of makes sense as Avengers might still be filming and even if it’s done, the footage will be in such rough shape that there won’t be much that can impress. After all, when you consider how much effects work all the heroes on screen together will take, the raw footage can’t look very spectacular.

Marvel will likely have a booth promoting the films and might even have some stuff strewn around the con (virals, outdoor displays, and the like) but it definitely takes some thunder out of Hall H as The Avengers would’ve surely been its biggest panel. Now the question becomes Captain America. It comes out the Friday of the con but will Marvel have a big event screening with the cast and crew on hand or just let the fans flock to it on their own? We shall see soon enough.

UPDATE: After scanning the list more carefully it also reveals TV will stick to Ballroom 20 as its largest room on Thursday through Saturday but will be taking over Hall H on Sunday (with at least Buffy Musical and Supernatural).

Wow. WBTV just announced they’re bringing 16 shows to the con! After the big lack-of-movies freak out, it’s good to see that TV might be having its biggest con ever.
And it wouldn’t be Comic-Con without a visit to the Warner Bros. booth. The Studio will once again have a can’t-miss, nearly 3,000-square-foot destination on the convention floor, at space #4545. Anchored by the iconic Warner Bros. Water Tower, the booth is a must-visit location for autograph signings, multiple interactive kiosks for fans to play video games from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, and much, much more. Stay tuned to @TheWBdotcom on Twitter or www.thewb.com/comiccon in the coming weeks for more details about activities at the booth.

SPECIAL SNEAK PEEK PILOT SCREENINGS

WEDNESDAY, JULY 20 • 6–9 PM • BALLROOM 20

Comic-Con isn’t just for comics anymore, this much we know. But over the past couple of years, video games have been taking a more prominent role on the show floor. With E3 just past and video game companies prepping for a big push into the second half of the year, expect this year to be no different.

Let’s take a look at some of the video game companies we might expect to see at this year’s con.

The Big Three

Sony had a huge presence last year. Their console business was demoing the Playstation Move motion controller and games, and at a separate booth Sony Online Entertainment was showing off games like Clone Wars Adventures and DC Universe Online. Now that the PS Vita has been announced, expect to go hands-on with demo units, as well as continued support for SOE MMOs that continue to draw the Comic-Con crowd. Also expect to see some of their bigger first-party releases such as the God of War: Origins and ICO & Shadow Of The Colossus collections.

Nintendo was also at the con last year with two booths on the floor. One was a slime-designed booth promoting Dragon Quest IX for the Nintendo DS where they offered SDCC-exclusive downloadable quests to attendees. The other was to promote their Pokemon franchise, primarily the card game. Expect Nintendo to return to the show with the 3DS, but don’t get your hopes up expecting to get your hands on a Wii U. In the same way Nintendo wasn’t pushing the 3DS last year ahead of its release, I’m afraid they won’t be bringing the Wii successor to the con this year.

Microsoft had a tiny booth last year, and instead opted to set up shop across the street at the Hard Rock Hotel. This allowed attendees to experience the Kinect motion controller with a more generous space without the show floor’s huge crowds. If E3 was any indication, then they’ll probably be pushing Kinect hard this year as well. That’s okay by me, because between Mass Effect, Star Wars and Forza 4, there’s plenty of Kinect-ready titles that I’d want to play. Plus, there’s new Gears of War and Halo titles due this fall that should have playable builds on-hand. Whether they decide to bring a bigger booth to the show floor or once again maximize the available space outside of the convention hall, I’m certain they’ll be back big.

Third Party Companies

EA also set up across the street in the Gaslamp Quarter, giving attendees a “behind closed doors” look at Dragon Age II, complete with required NDAs from those eager to get an early peak, and playable kiosks of Dead Space 2. This year, they’ve got the aforementioned Mass Effect 3, plus their answer to the Call of Duty juggernaut, Battlefield 3, and the forever-in-development Star Wars MMO The Old Republic. With show much riding on the success of their upcoming titles, I would expect them to return to the con and its crowds in order to generate some good press and positive word of mouth.

Harmonix had a big stage for Rock Band 3, but with the music game genre all but drying up last year, a return should not be expected. The same canot be said for Capcom, who set up a fighting ring to promote their Marvel vs. Capcom 3 with fighting tournaments throughout the weekend and exclusive character reveals. Expect a rematch in the ring for their new upcoming Street Fighter vs. Tekken game. Capcom also gave attendees early access to Fortune City, with kiosks of a playable Dead Rising 2. There’s more Dead Rising to come this year, but more exciting is the return of franchise favorites Resident Evil and Devil May Cry. Expect Capcom to have a big presence with a return appearance on the show floor.

THQ pushed their new entry to the Red Faction series last year with a stunning booth sporting a giant posable mech and regular developer-led demonstrations for attendees. This year, fans would go nuts if the collaboration with Red Faction-developer Volition and con-staple Guillermo del Toro had a presence, either with some lifesize models of his signature creature designs, or better yet an appearance by the man himself. At the very least, Volition could show their newest entry to the multi-million selling Saint’s Row series.

Activision had exclusive Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions reveals during the con last year. Now that the Spidey series is an annual franchise, look for them to demo the new Spider-Man: Edge of Time for lucky True Believers. Another Marvel title, X-Men Destiny, is due from Activision this year, so you can bet that will be at the show, too. And a recent tweet from Marvel Studios games division indicates there will be more surprises in store:

Telltale, leaders of the modern-day adventure game genre, had a small booth last year but weren’t showing their most anticipated title, Back To The Future, ahead of its winter release. Now that they have the upcoming Jurassic Park, as well as games based on comic favorites The Walking Dead and Fables, it’s expected they will return, hopefully with more to show this year.

NC Soft bought the latest installments of their Guild Wars and City of Heroes RPGs in their booth, during panels and even throwing a big offsite event at the Hard Rock. They’ve already confirmed they’ll be back promoting City of Heroes (at booth #5345, to be exact) and an NC Soft Meet & Greet at the Hard Rock Hotel. No further details yet as of press time. But they will have an SDCC-exclusive Mk-VI “Victoria” costume code for those who stop by the booth and meet the developers.

To answer the SOE’s DC Universe, Marvel has two MMOs to cover a wide spectrum of players. They have their Super Hero Squad Online MMO for younger fans, but more interesting is the long-rumored and recently-confirmed Marvel MMO from Secret Identity Studios. The latest on this project is that its being written by Brian Michael Bendis, so it has some real star power attached. It would be nice to see Marvel finally give some more information on this project, either at their booth or, even better, at the aforementioned Marvel Games panel (which yours truly will be there covering, natch).

And Panels, Too!

And it’s not all about the show floor – throughout the weekend, expect scattered panels on some upcoming video game releases. Last year, David Jaffe was on hand for Twisted Metal, Warren Spector pushed the much-hyped Epic Mickey, Cliff Blezinski was showing an early build of Gears of War 3, and Bungie and 343 Industries had Halo: Reach panels. It’s a sure bet video game developers and publishers will return to the panel schedule to promote their 2011 releases and use Comic-Con to connect with fans ahead of September’s Penny Arcade Expo.
