SDCC PM Update: Game of Thrones, Joss Whedon, The Hobbit – Oh My!

We’re all starting to feel a little elmayimbe-envy. The writer for Latino Review has been scooping everyone with SDCC news ahead of the official announcements, and today he delivered a triple whammy of leaks for some of the most high-profile panels attending this year’s con.

First, he tweeted Warner Bros. Pictures and Relativity Media will have a shared panel in Hall H on Saturday, July 14 from 2PM-5PM in Hall H.

This basically confirms the previous rumor that Warner Bros. would be bringing Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim to SDCC this year. It also tells us that the slate of films to be covered in the three-hour timeslot would most likely be The Hobbit, Man of Steel, and Pacific Rim. We don’t believe WB would squeeze in a fourth film due to time constraints, but a surprise DC Comics announcement could still make its way out.

Next, he tweeted Game of Thrones panel will be on Friday, July 13 at 3PM.

No mention of room for the panel, but our guess is that it will be in Hall H. It was widely reported the difficulty attendees experienced in getting into Ballroom 20 to see the popular HBO show’s panel, and we’d be perplexed if CCI didn’t move the panel to a bigger room this year to avoid a repeat disaster. Also to note, Big Bang Theory is also scheduled for Hall H on Friday, so that would be two television shows in Hall H on the same day. A first for a non-Sunday.

Then he tweeted Joss Whedon would be back at SDCC this year, also on Friday, July 13 at 5:30PM, in Ballroom 20.

The man behind Marvel’s The Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dr. Horrible will appear in his own panel. But we’re not complaining; we’d probably be just as entertained with Joss reading the phone book as we would be listening to his stories from the set of the biggest superhero movie of all time. What’s important to note here for our readers is, if Game of Thrones and the Joss panel are indeed in two different rooms, SDCC attendees will need to make a difficult choice which one they want to see most.

Finally, when our own Sara Irvin asked about The Walking Dead and American Horror Story panel news, he mentioned The Walking Dead Escape at Petco Park, which we already knew about, and said no news yet on the popular FX horror series entering its second season this fall. Our fingers are crossed.

Lastly, in some non-elmayimbe news, TheOneRing.net announced their annual panel would return again this year:

With a time slot that has become something of a tradition, the fansite will open the show on the first hour of the first day. Thursday, July 12, from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m., in room 6DE, TORn will talk Hobbit. The room holds 1,000, and like every year, especially this year, a capacity crowd is expected with many unable to get in. Being the first event of the day also means that if the room is full early, we can start early and stretch our hour into more if possible. Another great feature of being the first event of the day, the convention is more liberal about giveaway items.

They also speculated that as The Hobbit wrap party is scheduled for July 7, most of the main cast including Billy Connolly, Richard Armitage and Martin Freeman would be available to attend the aforementioned Warner Bros. panel on Saturday.
