Report: The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2 Flying Into SDCC?

Teaser PosterLast summer, when the trailer for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 dropped during Comic-Con, fans around the globe rejoiced. And it looks like the studio might be heading back to Comic-Con again this year for the final installment, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2.

In a recent interview with Collider, director Francis Lawrence was asked whether he’d be attending San Diego Comic-Con 2015 with the film. Although his answer was only that he “thinks” they are going, and that he’s unsure if he’s “officially allowed to say anything about it”, it’s a positive sign. Here’s the pertinent part of the interview:

Collider: Are you going to Comic-Con with the film?

Lawrence: You should ask Lionsgate that, but I think we are.

Collider: I think you are too, but I was curious if you are.

Lawrence: I just don’t know if I’m officially allowed to say anything about it so…

Collider: It doesn’t matter, no one’s watching this.

Lawrence: I think we are going.

Collider: Do you think the cast or?

Lawrence: I, you know what, I have not seen a list. I have not seen a list but I think we are going.

Last year, the studio teamed up with Samsung for an offsite at the Hard Rock Hotel, in a space designed to look like the Capitol, and where fans could walk through interactive activities and get a first look at the trailer. A handful of cast, including Natalie Dormer, Elden Hensen, Mahershala Ali, Evan Ross, and Wes Chatham also signed autographs inside the convention center at Lionsgate’s booth.

However, as exciting as that was, most Comic-Con attendees are hoping more for a repeat of 2013’s Comic-Con experience, when stars Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson drew huge crowds that filled Hall H (and also the only panel ever held at SDCC for the series).

As this is the final film in the franchise, it would give fans one last time to say goodbye, and to get attendees even more pumped for the film’s November 20 release date.

But Lawrence in particular is a very busy actress, so whether she has time to attend the convention could be the final decision in whether there’s a panel or not. Given that Liongate has a firm interest in Comic-Con though (they even just partnered with CCI on a streaming deal), and that they’ve always done something at Comic-Con for the films, we believe they’ll be pulling out every stop they can for this year.
