‘The Boys’ Are Heading to San Diego Comic-Con 2019

It’s never too early for San Diego Comic-Con news.

The internet lit up this afternoon when Amazon dropped its first trailer for The Boys, which takes place in “a world where superheroes embrace the darker side of their massive celebrity and fame”. A group of vigilantes known informally as “the boys” work to take down corrupt superheroes “with no more than blue-collar grit and a willingness to fight dirty”.

If that sounds exactly like Comic-Con-friendly-fare – you’d be right. Sharon Tal Yguado, who serves as head of genre series at Amazon, mentioned on Twitter that we’d be seeing the series at the convention this year, ahead of its July 26 drop date.

Now, as for in what form we’ll be seeing the series at Comic-Con, that remains to be seen. With SDCC 2019 set for just a week earlier, it could be too close to the convention to go all out with a panel with series stars Karl Urban, Elisabeth Shue, Chace Crawford, and others. They could also choose to do a combined panel with several of their series, as they did in 2018. Amazon could even choose to forego a panel entirely and simply focus on an offsite.

However, we think the most likely scenario is a combination of both a panel and an offsite. Amazon has gone big the last two years on the offsite front, with big activations for The Tick in 2017, and going even bigger with the amazing, multi-faceted offsite for Jack Ryan in 2018. We fully expect to see something of that scale again for 2019 — and we’d honestly be surprised if they didn’t have some sort of panel presence.
