Lumpia with a Vengeance, the Filipino American action comedy, is heading to San Diego Comic-Con with one of our favorite things: a food offsite (and a whole lot more).
The film, a crowdfunded sequel to the 2003 cult classic Lumpia, continues the story of Fogtown, where a lumpia-wielding avenger named Kuya is here to take on a crime syndicate selling drugs disguised as food. With the help of some friends both old and new, can they save the town?
Following successful screenings at both Comic-Con Special Edition and WonderCon, as well as the film festival circuit, Lumpia with a Vengeance is heading to San Diego Comic-Con with a week of delicious activities.
They’ll have a panel titled “The Astonishing Origin of the Deep Fried Universe & the Uncanny LUMPIA Wrappers!” with creatives behind the film on Thursday, July 21 at 7pm in Room 7AB. Patricio Ginelsa (writer/director), Mark Muñoz (UFC), April Absynth (Blindspotting), Darion Basco (The Fabulous Filipino Brothers), Katrina Dimaranan (Miss Universe Philippines Tourism 2021), Lawrence Iriarte (producer), Edward Baon (Lumpia), Gerald Pilare (illustrator), Vania Hardy (artist), Patrick Ballesteros (concept artist), and Patrick Michael Strange (Nerds of Color, ShoPowSho) will take to the stage to reveal insider secrets on how representation and community building play a vital role in the future of their film and companion indie comic book series Legendary Lumpia Squad.
Those who attend the panel will also receive a free print by Stephen Segovia.Â
Attendees will also be treated to a free screening from 8:15pm-10pm at the Marriott Grand Ballroom 5.
But what we’re maybe most excited about is that Lumpia will be taking over the Gaslamp Lumpia Factory (423 F St) in the Gaslamp on Thursday-Saturday night of the con for a special pop-up. You’ll be able to stop by for a meet-and-greet with those behind the film, as well as a special Lumpia with a Vengeance menu. Times are fluid, but the pop-up should be open roughly:
- Thursday, July 21 – 10pm to close [UPDATED] Premiere Afterparty
- Friday, July 22 – 8pm to 10pm [UPDATED] Jayson Atienza
- Saturday, July 23 – 8pm to 9pm [UPDATED] Patrick Ballesteros
[UPDATE July 18]
In addition, you can catch the Lumpia cast and crew signing at two different times in the Sails Pavilion. On Thursday, July 21, from 5pm-6pm, you’ll also get a free print at the signing with art by Tata Ponsi / Bayani Art; or on Friday, July 22, from 12pm-1pm, you’ll also get a free poster with art by Whilce Portacio and Ramund Lee. Both are while supplies last.
[UPDATE July 11]
The final artist for the pop-up has been revealed, and it’s award-winning Jayson Atienza — who has worked on high profile brands like Nike, Jordan, NBA, ESPN, and more. He’s created the San Diego Comic-Con exclusive to the new Lumpia With a Vengeance trade paperback compilation, which is available at SDCC in an exclusive hyperfoil variant cover.
The 150-page book collects all three issues of Lumpia with a Vengeance, along with bonus re-mastered and re-colored pages from issues #1 and #2. It’s limited to 200 pieces, and will be available for $45 only at Small Press #M-06.
You can also catch Atienza at the Gaslamp Lumpia Factory pop-up on Friday, July 22 from 8pm-10pm, where you’ll be able to meet the artist, and get your copy of the virgin variant edition of the trade paperback ($40) signed.
[UPDATE July 10]
Following the panel and screening at the convention center on Thursday, July 21, fans can head to the Gaslamp Lumpia Factory (10pm to close) for the Premiere Afterparty, with Lumpia cast/crew. The event will be first come/first serve.
Additionally, you’ll be able to stop by Kid Heroes Productions #M-06 in Small Press all week while supplies last to pick up a San Diego Comic-Con exclusive The Legendary Lumpia Squad #1 variant cover by Stephen Segovia. It’s limited to 200 pieces, and available for either $20, or $30 in a set with the virgin cover.
[UPDATE July 6]
A very limited number of holofoil copies of the comic will be for sale at the restaurant
Saturday’s special meet and greet guest has been announced as Patrick Ballesteros. Patrick will be dining on lumpia and signing copies of the comic book as well as a limited edition print (while supplies last) from 8pm – 9pm.
