Under the Tents 2023: DCD Collects, Josh Cassara, Chris Uminga, Sandy Fox

I woke up with a bad case of the Mondays but they didn’t last long when I remembered that Monday means a whole new exciting week of San Diego Comic-Con news and reveals. Fingers crossed that all the bad news is out of the way and it’s full speed ahead with activations, exclusives and panels.

Let’s take a look at some of the good news you might have missed:

  • Sure, you may not be able to see a Lucasfilm panel in Hall H this year, but there will be no shortage of Star Wars content at San Diego Comic-Con. Beast Within Productions revealed on Facebook that actor Spencer Wilding will be appearing on the panel “Star Wars: Past, Present and Future” on Friday.

  • Patrick Ballesteros is still riding high on the Ted Lasso joy and we are not complaining. This trio of BFFs will be making it’s way to Comic-Con this year.

  • Paulietoy’s Paul Draper is still teasing us with artwork for the Chewie x Bluey mash up creation “Chewy” vinyl toy. Chewy was conceived by Draper, sculpted by Rich Page, with moulding, casting and painting by Jeremy and Jaime Bourquin. Check out the final product below and look for it at SDCC from DKE Toys.

  • We really are doing our best to be patient while we wait for the official exhibitor list. Luckily, we have helpful folks like Kid Heroes Productions, letting us know that, yes they will be exhibiting and also their location, in Small Press at #M-06. They will be revealing their exclusives line up and their signing schedule soon.

  • Artist and zine maker John Lucien Grillo has started work on what he’ll be bringing to SDCC, which includes a bunch of fun originals.

  • If Oppenheimer isn’t quite enough intrigue for you, you’ll want to check out War Games, who will be demoing their tabletop strategy game Proliferation all weekend long.

  • Doop is slinging drinks in this fantastic X-Men print by Josh Cassara, with colors by Tim Brown. Bottoms up, everyone!

  • Artists and writers looking to break into the comic industry will have a chance to hone their skills at the Comic Creator Connection. Head over to Marina D at the Marriott Marquis on Thursday, July 20 or Friday, July 21 from 7:00–9:00 pm for this fast-paced networking event. Check out all the details on the official web site.

  • Budding game developers, your time to shine is on Saturday, July 22 at the Gaming Creator Connection, also at the Marina D at the Marriott Marquis, from 1pm – 3pm. The official details for that event are also on the official site.

  • Pugs and corgis and poodles, oh my! Scott C is sketching up a collection of playful pups that look like they might just end up being a print for SDCC. Fingers (and paws) crossed!

  • The Sails Pavilion will have another familiar face…er…voice, that is. Sandy Fox, voice of Betty Boop, Sailor Moon, and Hello Kitty will be signing autographs on Saturday from 2:30pm – 7pm.

  • Leader at Start Fruit Books, Mahou Shoujo Matt, is making his first visit to San Diego Comic-Con and will, appropriately, be on a panel for manga industry publishers.

  • Chris Uminga is getting into the spirit of things for Comic-Con with a new print for Wednesday, drawn in Uminga’s signature style.

  • DCD Collects is teasing us with the fact that there are only twenty-five days left until Comic-Con, but they are doing it in the best way possible, with an Astro Boy print by Lee Kohse. You can find DCD Collects at booth #1605 with this limited edition print and much more.

  • You can’t have a party without Josie and the Pussycats, and artist Dan Parent is extending that (informal) rule with a Josie and the Pussycats variant cover that will be available at San Diego Comic-Con. Parent will also have an Archie mermaid (and mer-male) themed exclusive also available.

  • Celebrating the 20th anniversary of Dead@17, Josh Howard will be offering this variant cover of the original premier issue, which debuted at San Diego Comic-Con 2023. Congrats, Josh!

  • And finally today, creator Jeff Pina has made a one-of-a-kind drawing that will have Star Trek fans trying to beam down to his booth, Small Press #Q-06, to purchase.
