The writing was more or less on the wall when last week DC released their San Diego Comic-Con plans, across the show floor and panels, and there was one notable exception: Hall H.
Although early reports indicated that Warner Bros. was still considering holding a Hall H panel for DC, that seems unlikely to happen now, as the biggest face of the current DC film division, James Gunn, confirmed to a user on Instagram today that he won’t be going to Comic-Con. However, he indicated that next year he would, opening the door to a big DC Hall H panel in 2024.
Like with most things this year, it’s almost certainly tied to the WGA strike and the potential for SAG to strike. Should SAG-AFTRA also go on strike, actors would be unable to attend promotional events with the studios such as a Warner Bros. or DC-specific panel, meaning if they strike, you wouldn’t have been able to see your new Superman and Lois, David Corensweet and Rachel Brosnahan, in person anyway.
At the moment, SAG has extended their negotiations with the AMPTA through at least July 12, but with San Diego Comic-Con starting just days later on July 19, there likely wouldn’t be enough time to plan the sort of big, splashy Hall H panel that fans crave. We’re also fairly far out from any of the new DC projects under Gunn’s leadership, so the timing, in conjunction with the strikes, likely simply didn’t make sense.
