James Gunn Skipping San Diego Comic-Con 2024

For anyone hoping for their first look at Warner Bros.’ new Universe, under the helm of James Gunn and Peter Safran, at San Diego Comic-Con this summer — if it happens, it looks like Gunn at least won’t be in attendance.

The Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad director confirmed on Threads that he won’t be at Comic-Con this year as he’ll be busy filming the upcoming Superman film. As excuses go for missing the convention, it’s a good one. As the first of the rebooted DCU films under Gunn and Safran, it’s got a lot of heavy-lifting to do as it tackles a new spin on what is arguably DC’s most iconic character.

Without Gunn, does that mean that Warner Bros. or even the upcoming Superman film starring David Corensweet and Rachel Brosnahan will skip the convention entirely? Warner Bros. has several other properties they could choose to showcase at the July convention, including the upcoming Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (September 6) which sees Michael Keaton reunite with Winona Ryder alongside the now-frequent Tim Burton collaborator Jenna Ortega; and The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim (December 13) upcoming animated film; and Red One (November 15). They’ve also got Joker: Folie à Deux (October 4), but the first film didn’t attend San Diego Comic-Con, so that might be a stretch — and Minecraft (April 4) feels like it may be too far out.

Even if Warner Bros. does bring some combination of those films, they could always toss up a logo, short teaser, or any other announcement even without Gunn’s star-power. After all, “I will be shooting” doesn’t mean that DC or Warner Bros. won’t be attending (and Gunn hasn’t been shy about confirming studios won’t be in attendance before) — it simply means that Gunn is going to be a little preoccupied this summer.
