Under the Tents 2024: Frank Cho, Nan Hockin, Fantoons, Priscilla Wilson

It’s been a pretty long week so far, but we’re here with another edition of Under the Tents to get you over the hump. While there are no butts featured prominently in this edition, we do have news you’ll love from brilliant artists like Frank Cho, Nan Hockin, and Priscilla Wilson, along with some exclusives and debuts dropping at the convention this year. Don’t be a butt; read on and get some SDCC news you know you want.

Here’s a look at what you might have missed:

  • It’s self-care summer for Marvel writer and artist Frank Cho, who is trimming down his summer schedule. Don’t worry; he’ll still be in the Exhibit Hall with the folks from ComicSketchArt taking over Row GG in Artists’ Alley at SDCC this year.

  • There are no mistakes in art; just unique, 1/1 pieces that can become more precious than an artist’s standard work. At least, that’s what Priscilla Wilson’s fans think of her “miscast” figures, which Wilson will also have with her at Comic-Con for $20 each at Booth #4721.

  • To paraphrase Warren Zevon, I saw a werewolf on an enamel pin at Scarlet Huntress’s Small Press Table #K-03; and his hair was perfect. OK, the hair is subjective, but these SDCC exclusive enamel pins are limited to only 50 of each, so pre-order now to make sure you get one.

  • Artist Chris Maze pays homage to The Bear with his latest one-of-a-kind 5″ x 7″ mixed media piece he’ll have with him at Booth #2103 during Comic-Con this year.

  • Legendary artist Ian Bertram is joining the awesome folks at the Felix Comic Art Booth #4612 for the first time ever during SDCC this year.

  • Are you an “FoD” (Friend of Don)? Each year, artist Don Nguyen pools resources with fellow Exhibit Hall vendors to form a support network for each other. As you can see, it’s a pretty supportive network, so if you’re looking for recommendations for artists to check out, start at Artists’ Alley Table #HH-01.

  • Frank Zappa once said, “Watch out where the huskies go, and don’t you eat that yellow snow.” Fantoons creative studio wants to say “hello” to you at Booth #1702 during SDCC this year. They even say they’ll have some rockin’ goodies with them at their booth.

  • CNN pop culture reporter Roy Schwartz will be hosting a panel at Comic-Con this year and shared the details with his Twitter followers.

  • OK, you like wearing cosplay around San Diego, but have you ever thought about being on the big screen? Former British pop star and current Star Wars actor Dee Tails is getting some of his fellow actors and Star Wars cosplayers together to share some tips at their panel on Friday, July 26 at 8pm PT in Room 23AB.

  • Don’t leave Small Press yet! Not until you stop by artist Nan Hockin’s Table #F-11 for these absolutely adorable Star Wars originals she’ll have with her.

  • Podcast host Erik Nagel has some strong opinions on this season’s Doctor. Whether you agree or disagree with him, you can hear him share his thoughts when he live-broadcasts from the Exhibit Hall floor during SDCC this year.
