Under the Tents 2024: Nan Hockin, Amy Jo Johnson, Patrick Ballesteros, Martin Hsu

You know we’re hitting Comic-Con season when we’ve got two back-to-back Under the Tents posts in two days. Are you ready and excited for a few more appearance announcements? How about some Patrick Ballesteros original minis? Maybe we’ll even toss in a few more exclusive reveals, it is Friday after all, and I’m really feeling the T.G.I.F. vibes.

Let’s take a look at some more exciting news:

  • There is a whole lot to unpack in this one Twitter post from writer (and original Pink Ranger) Amy Jo Johnson. First, Johnson and fellow writer Matt Hotson will be attending. Second, they will be at the Boom! Studios booth. Third, they will have copies of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return #1 with a variant cover by blockbuster artist Jenny Frison. And fourth, Johnson will also have variant covers of issue #4 by T.M.N.T. co-creator Kevin Eastman.

  • Looks like BB CRE.8 is still taking us for a ride on the tease train with another preview of what will be one of their daily exclusives. The iconic buildings of Balboa Park are a great backdrop for some action.

  • TDArt Gallery has revealed that artist Nir Levie (BIORIPPLE, Outskirts of Vision) will be attending San Diego Comic-Con for the very first time and he is offering commissions. Levie’s unique art style would be a welcome addition to any collection.

  • Martin Hsu showed off a front view of one of the sakura-inspired Mark Nagata designed Dragon Boy figures that will be exclusive to Comic-Con. Kanpai, Martin and Mark!

  • But wait! Martin isn’t just playing with figures today, he’s also hard at work on a new, large painting to accompany his “The Richmond Way” print from 2023.

  • Self-care is never a waste of time…or money. Obviously, this Ninobuni Self-Care vinyl figure feels the same way. You’ll be able to snag one of these red variants at San Diego Comic-Con according to this post on Instagram.

  • The always friendly and genial Scott Campbell (Scott C.) will be back at Comic-Con again. He will be at the Gallery Nucleus Booth #2015 with lots of cool new stuff. Fun times!

  • If you’ve ever wondered about the process of pitching your ideas for film or television, writer Douglas Eboch is preparing the perfect panel for you. He will be bringing back his “Pitching Film and TV” panel for 2024. Details will be revealed soon.

  • If you didn’t snag a Patrick Ballesteros commission, you can still go home with some original art. Ballesteros is bringing some of his mini originals. Earlier in the season his goal was to do one original each day leading up to the show. We’re not sure if he’s kept to that, but here’s at least three he’ll have in July.

  • Ballesteros isn’t afraid to also work digitally, of course, as seen in these two X-Men teases from Instagram, both tagged #sdcc. What do you think Ballesteros will be doing with these images?
  • Artist Carla Cohen is another one who has opened up pre-show commissions, and in doing so, has also announced that artist Lucio Parillo and writer (and System of a Down drummer) John Dolmayan will all be at the Torpedo Comics booth for San Diego Comic-Con.

  • Artist Lee Kohse was recently announced as a Special Guest for 2024. He took to Facebook to share some plans that include a trio of panels, a book and plenty of paintings. Kohse will have his own booth at the event, #1607.

  • Heather from Painted World Fiber Arts is a master crochet artist and has been incredibly busy planning for “loot drops” of crochet items that they will hide around the vicinity of San Diego Comic-Con this year. It’s a “finders keepers” type situation for those who discover them. Heather recently posted a staggering TWENTY-ONE characters she will drop. You’ll want to follow her on Twitter to see them all and to follow along.
  • For actor and writer Dani Fernandez three is NOT the magic number. Despite having three panels to plan for they are looking for more. If you need some hot takes, she’s the one to ask!

  • And finally today, Finesse Brands replied to a fan on their latest Instagram post that yes, they will have a presence at SDCC. We’ll keep our fingers crossed that it involves some of their sweet Sonic skate decks.
