Although over the last decade comic book fans have come to expect the name Becky Cloonan to be attached to the title of “writer,” we well know that her skills in art are proficient and formidable, with a distinct bold and expressive style. Whether the line is thick or thin, Cloonan always puts it there with a purpose. Insightful eyes, furrowed brows, agony and ecstasy, wet or wind blown – her ability to offer a range of emotions and countenance remains unparalleled. When paired with her excellent storytelling, the result is simply comic book magic.
In May of 2023 Cloonan was one announced as one of the founding creators of the David Steinberger and Chip Mosher project DSTLRY, a hybrid publisher that offers equity and ownership to it’s creators. Her first full DSTLRY project Somna, released in November of 2023, was created jointly with artist (and fellow founding creator) Tula Lotay, with whom Cloonan shares art and writing credits. The 1600s period tale touches on the themes of horror, eroticism and the supernatural as it follows Ingrid, a witch hunter’s wife, plagued by dreams and a mysterious and irresistible stranger.
For San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Cloonan will release two new screen printed posters for Somna, both highlighting the fantastic line work she created for the cover of issue #1. Full of buoyancy and movement, Ingrid is seen floating between two worlds, physically and metaphorically.
One print will be available at the CODA booth, #4900 and the other at the DSTLRY booth, #2314.
Additionally, Cloonan will be signing at the CODA booth on Friday, July 26 from 12pm to 1pm at #4900.
