The crossover we didn’t know we needed took place at Adult Swim’s Pirate Parrrty On The Green with AEW talent taking on Adult Swim characters inside a wrestling ring, during San Diego Comic-Con 2024.
The “AEW x [as] Battle for the Booty” tournament was held Thursday night at the offsite activation behind the San Diego Convention Center. At 7pm, the staff got the large crowd excited with giveaways and by the time 7:30pm rolled around, the crowd was ready to take in an evening of entertaining wrestling.
Participants from AEW included Johnny TV, Taya Valkyrie, Orange Cassidy, and Willow Nightingale, while Adult Swim was represented by Rachel, Meatwad, Mr.Frog, and Fang. The format was a tag team tournament where the final two teams wrestled for the Battle for the Booty championship which was won by the team of Orange Cassidy and Willow Nightingale. On Friday, the winning duo also had a signing at Diamond Select where the new Battle for the Booty championship was on display for all to admire.
The event was pretty packed but everyone was having a really good time, with the crowd regularly breaking out into chants supporting the various wrestlers and characters participating in the matches. The matches were not 5-star, 30-minute classics by any means but everyone performed in a way to entertain the crowd and keep everyone cheering. At the end of the day, in this specific environment where everyone in attendance might not be into wrestling, they accomplished what they set out to do: have fun.
The whole Pirate Parrrty was themed in specific colors and it was a pretty nice touch to have the wrestling ring also themed in matching colors. I can’t speak to much of the other offerings that the Pirate Parrrty had as I was attending specifically for the AEW event but there were a handful of stations for attendees to line up for as well as free popcorn and snow cones. With that San Diego humidity, the snow cones were a huge hit.
I’d love to see this become a regular event where the belt is awarded each year at the Adult Swim offsite but we will have to see what the future has in store for attendees. If you’re reading Adult Swim or AEW, we’d love to see the event return!
