Nerd Nite
Nerd Nite is back for San Diego Comic-Con, but things will work a bit differently this year. The local San Diego chapter will be hosting a party on Thursday, July 25 at 6pm at The Kensington Club, about a 12 minute drive from the Gaslamp.
They’ll be joined by the AAAS IF/THEN Ambassadors program (American Association for the Advancement of Science) for a panel talk show with talented women STEM professionals across a variety of industries who served as high-profile role models for middle school girls, including Erin Macdonald (Science Advisor for theĀ Star Trek franchise), as well as Elizabeth Rega & Stuart Sumida (a biology professor and vertebrae paleontologist).
Macdonald will dive into how concepts from astrophysics and general relativity are used in Star Trek to play around with space and time, while Rega and Sumiga will discuss how anthropology, anatomy and paleontology help make animated films and video games look and feel more realistic. Both talks highlight how important scientific principles are in making stories and visuals in entertainment more convincing.
