Attendees to ‘OD’ at SDCC with Xbox One’s Sunset Overdrive

Six months out, and Sony and Microsoft are still fighting it out for the top spot in the console wars. However, when it comes to San Diego Comic-Con, Xbox One seems to have the early lead.

A few weeks ago, we reported that Xbox One’s Kinect Sports Rivals would be holding a tournament during SDCC. Now we have news that another upcoming Xbox One game, Sunset Overdrive, will be joining Rivals in San Diego, according to a viral marketing site launched in support of the game.

The clever site tells the story Fizzco, a company started in 2007, creator of MuffinTops cereal and Easy-Peasy shelf meats, with the mission to “create the best damn beverages on Earth.” Its latest creation, the energy drink OverCharge Delirium XT,utilizes “the power of xtremophiles” and “is guaranteed to unlock your wasted potential”.

Of course none of it is real, but it ties in nicely with the upcoming third-person shooter from Insomniac Games. According to Joystiq’s recent preview, the game’s setting in Sunset City is filled with “deserted cars in the streets, garish buildings blanketed in pop-culture confetti and roaming bands of fleshy, boil-encrusted weirdos. They are the shambling victims of Sunset Overdrive‘s apocalypse, triggered by the launch and ill-advised consumption of a terrible energy drink called Overcharge Delirium XT.”

So what does all of this have to do with Comic-Con? According to the viral site, Fizzco will be holding a Sunset City Launch Party in San Diego on Thursday July 24. Hosted by company mascot Fizzie (who happens to have his own Twitter account, by the way), attendees at the party will be able to  “get down to some wicked dope beats, win free Fizzco Wearable Advertisements, and indulge in all the OverCharge your body can handle.”

So with Sunset Overdrive on Thursday July 24 and Kinect Sports Rivals on Saturday July 26, expect a full weekend of activities from Microsoft and Xbox One. We don’t yet know the details of where this will be held or how attendees will be able to particiate, but we’ll update everyone as soon as we hear more information on Microsoft’s plans.
