While just earlier this week, Comic-Con International was stating that at “this time both shows, WonderCon Anaheim and Comic-Con in San Diego, are moving forward as scheduled” — that situation has rapidly changed. While the fate of San Diego Comic-Con 2020 is still up in the air, Comic-Con International has announced that WonderCon 2020 will be postponed.
The convention was originally scheduled to take place on April 10-12, and while Gavin Newsom, Governor of California, announced late last night that he was putting into effect a ban on any convention over 250 participants in size for safety concerns over COVID-19 through the end of March — which would not have affected WonderCon yet — CCI has made the decision to postpone until “a later date”.
Refunds will be processed in the coming days.
So what does this mean for San Diego Comic-Con 2020? Comic-Con International stated that they “continue to work closely with officials in San Diego and at this time no decision has been made regarding the rescheduling of Comic-Con slated to take place this summer; July 23-26, 2020.” That convention is more than four months out, and with the exception of E3, most events being canceled have been in March-April. Most event organizers are likely waiting to see how containment and other measures in the US work, as well as if warmer weather could potentially help combat the spread of COVID-19, before making decisions on conventions further out. But the situation continues to change at a rapid pace, so keep an eye on this space.
