In news that should shock no one: an in-person WonderCon Anaheim will officially not be happening in 2021. The March 26-28 convention had seen no real updates since last year’s announcement that it was happening — and it even quietly disappeared off of the Anaheim Convention Center website a few weeks back.
However, the one question on everyone’s minds: Would San Diego Comic-Con also be cancelled at the same time? And the answer is… not yet, at least.
Comic-Con International announced today that the WonderCon Anaheim convention will next take place on March 26-27 as WonderCon@Home virtual convention, first seen last year, which included YouTube panels and more.
Unlike with last year’s SDCC, WonderCon 2020 badges were automatically cancelled and refunded at the time of the announcement, so there are no badges to roll over or get refunded at this point.
San Diego Comic-Con is still scheduled at the moment for July 21-25, 2021 — but that could obviously change. In the WonderCon announcement, Comic-Con International even stated they are continuing to “marshal [their] resources for Comic-Con this summer”. Whether they really mean Comic-Con@Home this summer or if they really still believe a physical San Diego Comic-Con is possible is a matter of some debate.
Currently, the only announcement about the con has been that an additional badge sale wouldn’t be held. Instead, SDCC goers who held a 2020 badge and wished to roll them over were given the option to do so (and if you don’t remember this, if you didn’t request a refund, don’t worry — your badge rolled over automatically).
Currently, the San Diego Convention Center is being used as a shelter for the homeless amid the COVID-19 pandemic through at least the end of March, and large gatherings are also currently banned in the state of California.
When we’ll hear more news about San Diego Comic-Con is anyone’s guess.
