Under the Tents 2023: Jim Lee, Martin Hsu, Geeky Hooker

Can you believe that Preview Night for SDCC 2023 is a mere three weeks from tomorrow? We know you’re busy with your Comic-Con prep, because you’re reading this edition of Under the Tents for the latest and greatest SDCC news from Jim Lee, Hyperactive Monkey, lots of first-time-at-SDCC announcements, and one instance of scream-sobbing from Nik Walker.

Here’s a look at what you might have missed:

  • Who doesn’t appreciate a good floof? Artist/photographer Jennifer Nolan let her Instagram followers know she’ll have plenty of it at the SDCC 2023 Art Show with her crocheted Flareon on display.

  • If you’re wandering Artists’ Alley (why wouldn’t you be?), make sure to stop by Table #II-08 and check out artist Scott Williams’ SDCC 2023 exclusives. The first you’ll find is his very limited release of 300 copies of his X-Men Virgin Sketch SDCC Variant #22.

  • Prolific illustrator Jason Edmiston is also a prolific tease on Instagram. You’re gonna need a bigger boat (poster tube?) for this work-in-progress for Booth #4617 at SDCC this year.

  • Local San Diego artist Vince Alvendia, known to his friends and family as EggdropRamen.Studio, tweeted some works-in-progress ready for watercolor he’ll have with him at Artists’ Alley Table #DD-02.

  • Comic app developers and game creators Cyanide & Happiness will be on the SDCC Exhibit Hall floor this year at Booth #1234. This is also a reminder to change the combination on your luggage.

  • You didn’t think we were done with crochet announcements, did you? Well, SNIK, SNIK if you did, bub, because Geeky Hooker’s crocheted Wolverine might have something to say about that when you find him around the convention center during San Diego Comic-Con this year.

  • Online comic shop KRS Comics has joined forces with The Comic Mint to bring some top-shelf artist guests and exclusives to SDCC this year. Just who or what remains to be seen, but that should be coming soon.

  • Artist Martin Hsu is almost finished with his adorable limited edition 11″x14″ Ted Lasso Cats piece he’ll have with him at Booth #4530 at SDCC this year.

  • Freelance digital artist Alyssa T wants to make sure she announced that she’ll be at Table #CC-15 in Artists’ Alley at SDCC this year and would really love it if you stopped by.

  • Writer/actor/teacher Nik Walker sure has some strong feelings about being at his first San Diego Comic-Con this year, presumably for the animated series he’s writing with fellow Broadway alum Alex Brightman. I really hope the scream-sobbing is out of joy!

  • If you were holding off on ordering that commission from Felix Comic Artist Daniel Warren Johnson, we’re sorry to say it’s too late, as his commission list for SDCC 2023 is full.

  • I don’t want to end any UTT with bad news, so here’s one last bit of really good news; legendary DC artist Jim Lee confirmed via Twitter that SDCC 2023 is among his schedule of summer conventions.
