Under the Tents 2024: The Nacelle Company, Effin’ Birds, Geeky Hooker, Chris Maze

We are 133 days away from San Diego Comic-Con, and if that doesn’t sound close enough because you’re so excited, then you’ve come to the right place. We’ve got updates for you on some of our favorite artists and creators, including Effin’ Birds, Geeky Hooker, Chris Maze, and more, as well as a potential tease on what The Nacelle Company is planning for next summer.

Here’s a look at what you might have missed:

  • We have some news that will have you saying a few four-letter words. And by that, we mean “cool”, and “yeah!”, and “epic”. Why, what did you think we meant? Effin’ Birds creator Aaron Reynolds will be bringing his foul-mouthed fowls back to San Diego Comic-Con for another year of exhibiting, and we can’t wait to see what he’s got up his wing this year. You can follow along on the event page.

  • Los Angeles-based illustrator Demi Chen is making her first appearance in San Diego Comic-Con’s Artists’ Alley this year. Swing by her table (number to be announced) and welcome her to Comic-Con!

  • Is it too early to talk about SDCC Commissions? I might be biased, but I don’t think so, and neither does LEGO artist Dan Veesenmeyer, who’s opening his SDCC commission list for the first time in a long time. Keep an eye out for our consolidated list of SDCC artists with open commissions coming… soon.

  • Illustrator/comic book author Ryan Dunlavey may have been disappointed about WonderCon this year, but with every dark cloud comes a silver lining – he will be at San Diego Comic-Con. Yeah, we’re good, too.

  • On a recent episode of the Word Balloon with John Siuntres, The Nacelle Company CEO Brian Volk Weiss discussed Nacelle’s upcoming animated series, rebooted from many of your favorite 80’s comics. Over the next few years, fans will be treated to the “Nacelleverse” in partnership with Oni Press, which will include Biker Mice From Mars (with Ryan Reynolds and his Maximum Effort co-producing), Robo Force (co-produced by Dwayne Johnson and his Seven Bucks Production), Sectaurs, and more. Weiss teased that fans can look forward to a “pretty big announcement” about the streaming home of the upcoming series that they’ll be saving for “a certain event in mid-July”. With Robo Force out later this year, could fans also get a first look at the series?

Hunter Gorinson, President & Publisher of Oni Press, also teased that fans can look forward to learning more about the various pieces of the Nacelleverse (including the comics side) around San Diego Comic-Con this summer.

  • Hold me closer, Tony Daniel. If you’re longing to hold some of artist Tony S Daniel’s artwork, then good news — later this year he will be opening commission slots for both C2E2 and San Diego Comic-Con.

  • Artist Chris Maze has been hard at work prepping for San Diego Comic-Con, and he has a new piece that he promises to be “ridiculous”. Color us intrigued.

  • What is a Comic-Con without some crocheted critters from Geeky Hooker? We hope we never have to find out. She has two brand new creations to show off, including a tiny Totoro and a tiny President Loki who is burdened with glorious purpose. For the uninitated, to get your hands on these, you’ll need to follow along with @GeekyHooker during the convention, when she’ll drop hints about the #CRITTERDROP. Whoever finds it first, wins the tiny crocheted critter and gets to keep it.

  • Power duo (and sisters) Julie and Shawna Benson have always been big fans of San Diego Comic-Con. While it looks like the Benson sisters (who have written for everything from Star Trek: ProdigyThe 100, and Batgirl & The Birds of Prey across both TV and comics) don’t have any plans for panels this year, they will still be around, having some fun. If you see them, be sure to say hi.

  • David Petersen, creator of the beloved comic Mouse Guard, is returning to SDCC this year on the exhibit floor. Stop by his dedicated booth to learn more about the adventures of “mice with swords”.

  • Artist Rachta Lin will also be exhibiting this year, and you can follow along on the Facebook event page to learn more.

  • Bob! Draws Stuff, and Bob! also goes to San Diego Comic-Con. You can catch him later this summer (after a stop at WonderCon in Anaheim) in Artists Alley #EE-09.
