You can’t fault Portland-based Eisner and Harvey award-winning publisher Oni Press for wanting to celebrate. After all, it is the 20th Anniversary of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim, a series that defied all creator and publisher expectations by selling millions of copies over six volumes and spawning a motion picture, a Netflix series, and video game. They are also celebrating the much-anticipated relaunch and reinvigoration of the EC Comics line with the first two titles in the imprint, Epitaphs From the Abyss and Cruel Universe. The breakout success of Jay Stephens’ Dwellings and Breanna Thummler’s Lights are the icing on an already very sweet cake.
All of those books will be in the spotlight for San Diego Comic-Con 2024 as Oni Press sets up shop at Booth #1829 in the exhibit hall with a massive display of comic books, graphic novels, and exclusives, as well as an impressive roster of creator signings, several panels, and one exceptionally cool giveaway.
Available exclusively at the Oni Press Booth #1829, fans will find the debut of the Scott Pilgrim 20th Anniversary Box Sets, in both color or the original black and white. The entire six volume series has been redesigned and fits into a deluxe collectors box laden with new artwork and limited edition bonuses. Need help carrying all your goodies? The Scott Pilgrim 20th Anniversary Tote Bag has room for (almost) everything and is limited to 500 pieces. O’Malley has created brand new artwork for this bag which you’ll be able to buy separately or you’ll receive a free one with a purchase of $100 or more.
LySandra Voung’s smash-hit Webtoon phenomenon will have dazzling new cover art on the Covenant Vol. 1 SDCC Exclusive Hardcover. Dwellings fans will want to check out the Dwellings “Not For Cowards” Shirt. Screen prints by hand are available in sizes S to XXL. The exclusive Biker Mice From Mars “Range” Print is 11″ x 17″ of glorious artwork by Eisner Award nominee Francis Portela and is limited to 200 pieces.
Only 300 sets of the EC Comics SDCC Exclusive Pin Set were made for the relaunching of the imprint, one pin each for Epitaphs From the Abyss and Cruel Universe plus a modernized emblem logo. That same updated logo, crafted by award-winning designer Rian Hughes, is also on the new EC Comics Logo T-Shirt, hand screen printed by Holy Mountain in North Carolina and available in sizes S through XXL.
The spotlight really belongs on this Epitaphs From the Abyss #1 giveaway, though. Available only to lucky attendees of the “EC Comics Lives Again At Oni Press” panel on Friday, July 26, Oni Press is honored to have this stunning artwork from Will Eisner Hall of Fame inductee and master illustrator Richard Corben. Although Corben passed away in 2020, it was through the help and generosity of his wife Dona Corben and the Corben Studios. Corben was the ideal choice for the very first in a line of variants that Oni is calling the Fan-Addict Editions, which will feature some of the most legendary creators in comic books.Â
Be sure to attend that panel on Friday, July 26 at 5pm in Room 23ABC to assure yourself a copy and where creators Jason Aaron (Thor), Corinna Bechko (Invisible Republic), J. Holtham (Night Thrasher), Klaus Janson (The Dark Knight Returns), Matt Kindt (BRZRKR), Jay Stephens (Dwellings), and Ben H. Winters (CBS’ Tracker) will discuss the launch and the direction of this bold and bloody new line of books.
Other panels include Oni Press: Groundbreaking Comics & Graphic Novels (Thursday, July 25 at 11am in Room 28DE) where creators Joey Esposito (Batman: Urban Legends), Melissa Flores (Biker Mice From Mars), Jay Stephens (Dwellings), Ben H. Winters (EC’s Cruel Universe) will join president & publisher Hunter Gorinson, editor-in-chief Sierra Hahn, senior editor Bess Pallares, editor Megan Brown and director of marketing Daniel Crary to unveil a host of announcements for 2024 and beyond.
And come wish Bryan Lee O’Malley a “Happy Anniversary” at the 20 Years of Scott Pilgrim with Bryan Lee O’Malley Panel (Saturday, July 27 at 11am in Room 7AB) for a one-on-one conversation with creator Bryan Lee O’Malley with SKTCHD’s David Harper. The career-spanning retrospective will include the origins of this iconic story, reflections on its legacy in comics and entertainment, and a look ahead to the future of Scott, Ramona, and the whole crew.
