Comic-Con International is taking the “international” portion of their name seriously — and plans to bring a version of Comic-Con to Málaga in Spain this year. This sounds similar to their “Special Edition” they held back in 2022, which was not a full blown event, but a smaller, supplemental option — just in a very different locale.
The Madrid news organization EL PAÍS broke the news, which was confirmed in a press conference on Monday, March 10. The event was negotiated between the City Council of Málaga, the Andalusian Tourism, the Andalusian Digital Agency and the Málaga City Council, and Comic-Con International, and we overseen by IMG Licensing, who has sought to seek more licensing agreements for Comic-Con International.
Comic-Con Málaga will be held September 25-28, 2025, with some outlets reporting it will be at the Palacio de Ferias, featuring panels and offerings spanning film, television, video games, and comics, with stars including Daniel Sánchez Arévalo, Icíar Bollaín, Carlos Areces, Paco Plaza, Álex de la Iglesia and Joaquín Mazón. Spanish filmmaker and actor Santiago Segura will serve as the host for the event.
The agreement is for three editions of the convention in Málaga, and is estimated to have an economic impact on the city of 30 million euros.
“We’re very excited to celebrate comics and the popular arts and share Comic-Con’s unique spirit with audiences in Europe. Málaga is a city full of energy, creativity and warmth—exactly the kind of place we had in mind for this historic expansion,” said David Glanzer, Chief Communications & Strategy Officer of San Diego Comic-Con International.
