Under the Tents 2025: Naoko Mullally, Jordan Blum, WETA, Geeky Hooker

Step right up, boys, girls and NBs! We have an exciting array of whimsical, fantastical, and magical news to share with you. A little bit of this, a little bit of that, and it all adds up to a whole lotta San Diego Comic-Con goodness. We have plenty of panel announcements to fill up your schedule, plus some cool things you’ll want to put on your shopping list and the return of the Geeky Hookers crochet drops. And did I mention panels? It’s a lot of panels, kids.

Let’s jump right in:

  • It’s (at least) triple duty for multi-disciplined creator Arthur Ebuen, who was approved for a trio of panels for SDCC 2025: “Exploring the Power of Sci-Fi”, “Writing Disciplines for the Undisciplined”, and “Crowd-Funding Lessons for Indie Cartoonists”.

  • Over on Reddit, user “garethvk” posted that their panel, “Hello Again! Horror Franchises That Are Long Overdue For An Update” was approved. We think this sounds like an exciting new topic that folks will have some serious opinions about.

  • Bestselling author Ryka Aoki (Light from Uncommon Stars) posted on Bluesky that they have been tasked to moderate a panel that “looks amazing” at SDCC. Also amazing: Pineapple Dole Whip!

heeee!!! looks like I’m going to San Diego Comic Con this year! Tor just asked me to moderate a panel that looks amazing that I can’t talk about yet! Pineapple Dole Whip, here I come!

  • The Geeky Hooker is back hookin’ all the geeky things again and will be droppin’ her crocheted creations in the vicinity of Comic-Con. If you find one, it’s yours to keep. The first pair of creations are looking pretty “super!” Find all the details on The Geeky Hooker’s website.

  • We all know that San Diego Comic-Con is everything it’s quacked up to be right? Arcana Studios certainly knows and over on Instagram they announced that they will be at the event and dropped some hits that it might have something to do with their Ultraduck character. Is Ultraduck waddling his way from a graphic novel to an animated feature? We can’t wait to find out.

  • It sometimes is hard to find good news on Facebook, but this week the delightful WETA Workshop announced that they will be joining Legend Story Studios at Booth #3613 during Comic-Con. We can’t imagine a better pairing and we’re already salivating while imagining what incredible stuff they will have on display.

  • Back to some fresh panel announcements, 5R Productions will be back for their fourth panel, after debuting at Comic-Con in 2023. That’s a pretty stellar record for just three years!

  • Cosplayer and streaming paleontologist Reysuka will be hosting a discussion of the paleontology of the Star Wars universe and Comic-Con. If the creatures in a galaxy far, far away are your thing, here’s your chance to find out more.

  • The first time you go to SDCC is a big deal… Now imagine going the first time as a published author… That’s a BIG DEAL. Author Leanne “L.A.” Schwartz (My Kind of Trouble, To A Darker Shore) will be doing just that, and we look forward to hearing what her plans are.

  • Using the power of positivity and manifesting has worked out for Carly Anderson, who will be moderating an as-of-yet-unnamed panel at Comic-Con, according to a Threads post.

  • We all know that one cat who thinks he’s super alpha, right? Well, creators Chris Mancini, Fernando Pinto, and Troy Peteri want to introduce you to THE Alpha Cat. You’ll be able to get a free copy at San Diego Comic-Con this summer.

  • Taskmaster fans, rejoice! Who will be crowned the Biggest Nerd of Them All? You’ll have to wait for the panel, recently announced on Facebook, by the fan-run tribute, Taskmaster LA.

  • Don’t panic if you don’t see Brian Cook and his Butts On Things at their usual spot on the exhibit floor at San Diego Comic-Con. They have secured a new, coveted corner spot, which will be revealed soon, along with all their tushie tchotchkes.

  • Ronin Club Collectibles is once again bringing the heat with their voice actor signings. Their first announcement is Ryusei Nakao (Dragonball, Moomin, One Piece, Bleach). Exact signing times and booth location will be announced closer to the show, but we suggest following them on Facebook for all the details.

  • No subject matter is too old or too obscure and no dive is too deep for a San Diego Comic-Con panel, it’s just one of the many things that sets SDCC apart from other shows. Case in point: this announcement for a panel about the Human Fly, to be moderated by writer and producer Joel Eisenberg.

  • Disney+ and Hulu announced some new upcoming “perks” for subscribers this week. While we wouldn’t normally share such news, this one seems worth noting because one of the “perks” that Hulu announced, according to KTLA, is a chance for passes to San Diego Comic-Con. Their weekly “drops” start June 2. Watch their Perks site for details.

  • Jordan Blum was making Minor Threats fans happy over on Bluesky when he revealed that a new third volume of his Dark Horse series with Patton Oswalt will be announced at San Diego Comic-Con.

  • Tucked into this Instagram post showing off some rubber-hose style character fan art, the team from Coffee Time dropped the news that their game will be returning to San Diego Comic-Con to demo.

  • As if one wasn’t enough, writer Shane Hawk (Anoka) will be on three panels at Comic-Con, in addition to having a signing at the Penguin Random House booth. Also tagged is writer Theodore C. Van Also Jr (The El), who will be one two of the panels. We’re also going to count this as the official confirmation that Penguin will be back with their awesome author signings. Lotta info in a little post!

Recent stuff:Started developing an Indigenous Horror tv series, namely establishing its 'show bible' full. Pilot writing starts this weekend.I'll be on 3 panels at San Diego Comic Con (2 w/ @tvayyyy.bsky.social) and signing books at the Penguin Random House booth!

  • Artist Jose Pulido took time out of their schedule to give fans a little update on Instagram that they hope to have nine new enamel pins for SDCC. Let me say that again, louder, for those in the back. NINE ENAMEL PINS. 😲

  • Author Sajni Patel (A Drop of Venom, The Trouble With Hating You) is exuding excitement in this Threads post, practically begging fans to go see her. We don’t think begging is even necessary, Sajni, we’re thrilled you’ll be there!

  • I bet you thought we’d get through a UTT without a Patrick Ballesteros mention, didn’t you? You thought wrong! We have three tidbits for you. The first is that Ballesteros will have “a few” blind bagged minis at his Mnemonic Coffee pop-up on the Tuesday before SDCC. Additionally, he teased two more items on Instagram, one for Andor and another that looks a LOT like a felt pennant. *Fingers crossed*

  • Calling all Baker Street kids! Guess who’s going to San Diego Comic-Con? It’s elementary, my dear reader, it’s writer Laurie R. King, who will be on a Sherlock Holmes panel on Thursday.

  • And finally today, it’s been FIFTY years since that terrible mayor of Amity Island didn’t close the beaches and this summer artist Naoko Mullally will urge us all back into the water with some Jaws goodness.
