Question Of The Week #5: What Is Your Favorite Restaurant At SDCC?

This year, in an effort to feature more attendees, rather than featuring just one per week — we’re featuring lots of you! We’ll have a new question each week, so be sure to keep an eye on our social media channels for each week’s question. Without further ado let’s get into this weeks question:

Our go-to every year at least once is La Puerta, in the Gaslamp. They have amazing carnitas and the drinks are so good. The service is amazing and we love their wet burritos. Photo is from my Yelp review.

Our favorite restaurant is Flemings, which is our go-to celebratory end-of-show dinner every year!

My favorite restaurant is the Gaslamp Breakfast Company.  It’s my place to go and have breakfast on days that I don’t need to be in the “Everything else” line. So far, my favorite dish is their California Breakfast Burrito.

Favorite restaurant? One of my favorite experiences was in ADDISON! It is a super expensive place that is a 3-Michelin-star restaurant! The meal lasted like 3 hours! Some of my favorite dishes from the tasting menu were fried chicken and soup! I can still taste them!

If your budget can afford it (and time), it is worth it going once!

Sadly, two of my favorite spots have since closed… the Tin Fish and Lolita’s. However, my favorite spot for group meals is Lotus Thai.

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, so Broken Yolk Cafe is always a stop in the 8 years I’ve attended. Great selection and everything has been good.

SDCC has been a family tradition for us since the days it was held in the basement of the El Cortez Hotel. Back then, our go-to spot was always Denny’s. These days, we make it a point to grab burgers at the Hyatt Grand. One of our favorite memories from last year was my dad absolutely loving the SDCC Hulk Burger — green bun and all!

Thank you SDCC for the wonderful lifetime of memories. (Carey Sabala, Penny Goforth (deceased), Mitchell Walker and Becca Sabala)

Our annual tradition is dinner at Bali Hai (Shelter Island) on Preview Night.  We don’t “do” PN but we always make time for Mai Tais to kick off our Con! 😉

Urban MO’s in Hillcrest.

Some way out of the Gaslamp to be sure, but MO’s has been solid for the past decade or so I’ve been stopping by my first day in town (typically the Wednesday of Con).

Strong margaritas, great burgers, a geek-themed drag show. What’s not to love about the place?  Nothing.

Blind Burro at Gaslamp!!!

I love The Melt, which I just discovered the Comic-Con before last… Maybe it’s only existed that long because I sure hadn’t seen it before 2023 (not having attended since 2019 until then).  Their grilled cheeses are to die for…and you just might if you eat more than one or two of them during the week.

Sombrero Mexican at the Rio Vista Shopping Center has become our go-to restaurant while in San Diego. It’s in walking distance so we work up an appetite getting there to eat their ridiculously giant-sized portions. Not kidding… Check out the pic of our niece with her giant burrito. You can tell she was annoyed because she knew that she was NOT finishing it.

Tardy’s Collector’s Corner

The Waves Taco Club! Great tacos and their murals are really cool!

I love this question and hope to get some new ideas! The food is one of my favorite parts about traveling to San Diego. The best food that I’ve had in San Diego would be from Fogo De Chao. Everything is delicious! Saying that, I think my favorite restaurant would have to be Prince Street Pizza. I love pizza and theirs are all really good.

I don’t know that I have a favorite restaurant in San Diego, but there are a few spots I generally hit during the con.
  • I always started the con at Tin Fish with a beer and (maybe) a burrito – Baja Ricks is carrying on that tradition.
  • If I’ve had a really long day at the con, The Old Spaghetti Factory is somewhere that always seems to be open late for a tasty meal.
  • The Melt on Fifth does a great, greasy cheeseburger and if you’re feeling really decadent you can go a few doors down to Ghiradelli for dessert.
  • I love getting a big breakfast at least once during the con, and Broken Yolk or the Gaslamp Breakfast Company are a couple of favs — the Breakfast Flight at Gaslamp is recommended for the hungry!
  • Finally, I have to mention the mac & cheese pizza from Basic Bar and Pizza (please be back open for the con). I got one last year, and it is definitely an experience I want to repeat!

Before I went plant-based, Lou and Mickey’s was my go-to place. My usual was the 45-day aged steak, butterfly cut. Once I went plant-based, I started going to City Tacos. They offer a variety of tacos, including portobello mushrooms and zucchini tacos. Been going on and off since 2010. So many restaurants. So many different types of food. Always willing to try something new.

Don’t really have a particular favorite restaurant during SDCC. So many great options in Gaslamp & Bayside area. If you have the time Richard Walker or Broken Yolk are excellent for Breakfast.  Plenty of tasty pizza places with plenty of variety, especially if you’re a fan of Chicago and New York style.  Seaport Village has many quick eats options.  If I was planning on spending mornings in the Hall H line, Hilton usually has breakfast burritos ready that aren’t too badly priced.  If you have a sweet tooth or are craving a smoothie, Sweet Things in Hilton has you covered.

My favorite restaurant is Asti Ristorante on 5th. The food is excellent. The service is always wonderful and they are amazing at dealing with my multiple severe food allergies. We always do a big group dinner there at least once during the con and it’s been a hit with all our friends. Most years we end up there more than once.

My favorite restaurant at SDCC is The Blind Burro on J Street near 7th Ave. I can’t remember which year we discovered it, but I think it was SDCC 2013, the summer after it opened in late 2012. My friends and I go there at least once per con and get their incredible cocktails and great food. One of my favorite Con memories there was in 2019 when I took my mom to her first and only Comic-Con before she passed away in 2021 and of course we hit up The Blind Burro with some friends.
I don’t have any pics of the food, but here’s a cute one of Mom and I at The Blind Burrito grabbing cocktails at what we dubbed Mom-ic Con 2019.

My fam has been attending Comic-Con for about 10 years and that 24-hour subway located on 6th and K street has been a real lifesaver, especially if it’s late, you need to feed the kids, and you’ve got picky eaters in the group.

For Comic-Con, I usually like to get food from Ralph’s and piece it together. At night, I’ll head to Mission Valley for Sombrero Mexican food. One of the shuttles goes in that direction by the way.

We couldn’t let the readers have all the fun, so some of the team here at the Unofficial Blog wanted to get in on the action as well. Let’s see who some of their favorites are.

I already mentioned Basic Pizza’s Mac & Cheese Pizza, which is sooooo good, but it’s TBD on if they’re open in their new location in time for SDCC 2025. But I had Cocina 35 last year (we went to the Liberty Station location, but they have locations in Barrio Logan, Coronado, Otay Mesa, and another downtown at 1435 Sixth Ave). And oh my god, their chilaquiles were life-changing. It was literally the first thing I added to our internal schedule spreadsheet for 2025. Also, shoutout to barleymash, which rarely has a long line, and has great eats (their wedge cobb salad is delicious and light, but still filling).

Without a doubt my favorite is Lucky’s Lunch Counter (338 Seventh Ave). This little counter service place has my heart and is almost always my first stop when I arrive in town.

Their BBQ Chicken Salad is so good (it has FRITOS on it!) and their portions are very generous. Their fries are shoestring style and always piping hot. Their staff is always friendly and even if there is a line, it always goes quickly. They accept online orders, so I like to order outside the convention center and by the time I get across the street and over to 7th Ave my order is ready for pick up. Not a lot of seating inside, but it’s more fun to sit outside and people watch anyway!
