Question Of The Week #7: What Is Your Favorite Thing To Do In San Diego (Outside Of SDCC)?

This year, in an effort to feature more attendees, rather than featuring just one per week — we’re featuring lots of you! We’ll have a new question each week, so be sure to keep an eye on our social media channels for each week’s question. Without further ado let’s get into this weeks question:

We love Petco Park. They always have great fun treats. The Gaslamp during the day is fun seeing all the cosplay and freebies. We spend at least half the con just outside the con. Plus the food. Yum!! Also the Dr Who exhibit outside was amazing.

Just walk around the surrounding area, pop into shops, building wrap sightseeing, and amble over to Seaport Village.   Of course, this would have to be just before the Con actually kicks off because I can’t waste time ambling while it’s on!  Maybe this year, since I missed getting Saturday, I’ll finally amble over to do the USS Midway tour.

My friends and I went to The Maritime Museum of San Diego last year on the Monday after SDCC, since our flight back to East Coast wasn’t until the late afternoon.  It was a fun and interesting trip through the history of ships, from the era of pirates and gallons, all the way through submarines and military vessels.   The museum itself is not one building, but rather 9 separate ships. Unless the museum has it closed off, feel free to go below decks on most vessels. The Berkeley also allows you to go through the engine room.

If you are staying at the Wyndham Bayside, the maritime museum is across the street and to the right,  an easy walk.

I know history isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I enjoy finding new things to do while in San Diego, even after 12 years of Comic Con.

My favorite things to do outside of the con is checking out the restaurants of San Diego. My boyfriend Matt and I look up both upscale and casual dining restaurants. We love asking for recommendations and being able to chat about our experiences from past cons and hearing how others rate each establishment. It’s a good way to expand our palettes as well as avoid any unfriendly encounters with restaurants that are not customer-friendly.

I enjoyed watching my wife having fun feeding the animals at SeaWorld San Diego!  This particular one was at the Bat Rays pool.  Yes, I still teased her that not only is she not getting paid to feed the animals, but she (I) also had to spend money.

Does drinking beer on Voodoo Ranger pirate ship count?

My favorite thing to do in SD besides SDCC is going to Petco Park for a concert and/or a baseball game.

My favorite thing to do/experience outside of SDCC is participating in Art Drops! Thanks to the amazing Geeky Hooker for inspiring me my first year attending, I crochet a few creations and stickers I’ve made to gift to other SDCC attendees throughout the weekend. I’ve adopted a “come and find me” style of Art Drops as opposed to hiding them around the convention center because I love the chance of getting to meet attendees and gifting my fun creations in person.
The goal for this year is to vlog my Art Drops, so if you’re interested in adopting any of my creations, please follow me on Instagram and Threads @francescupcreations and X @francescup for hints on where to find me around the convention center!

My favorite thing to do outside SDCC is catching up with friends that I can only see yearly there at Comic-Con. These are people that I have met through the years at SDCC and have kept in contact with. They are my con family and they have made my SDCC visits better every year, and I am very grateful to have them with me.

Honestly…only 2 things come to mind:
1. The beautiful sandy San Diego beaches.
2. The awesome Comic-Con Museum. I could actually give tours there with the weird knowledge I have.

Both are (to me and the family) the best place to relax and unwind before the hustle and bustle that is SDCC.

One of my fave things to do in San Diego outside of SDCC is hanging out around the Gaslamp District. My fave place is really Gaslamp Lumpia Factory on 423 F St. They got delicious Filipino bites, good vibes, and you’ll find karaoke or a DJ spinning at night. Even when SDCC is not around, I look forward to visiting Gaslamp Lumpia Factory when visiting SD!

I usually arrive on the Wednesday of the Con, so my only non-con time is the Monday after the con, so mostly I just want to recover.
That being said, I recommend a trip to the Comic-Con Museum if you want to keep the party going as they are taking down the banners. They usually have some great exhibits, and it’s nice to wander around Balboa Park.
I also have a tradition where a local friend takes me out to In N’ Out Burger, as we don’t have In-N-Out on the east coast. If we have time, we also love to hit the beach. The seals at La Jolla should be seen at least once.

My son daughter-in-law, and now my granddaughter go, and I have been tagging along for the last 5 years. I love going to the San Diego Zoo, and now I get to take my granddaughter!

La Jolla Cove to see the sea lion beach. The sea lions on that beach were cool too. Only about a 25-minute drive from the Convention Center.

We couldn’t let the readers have all the fun, so some of the team here at the Unofficial Blog wanted to get in on the action as well. Let’s see who some of their favorites are.

Several years ago we did the Patriot Jet Boat Thrill Ride and it was an unexpected delight! I could not stop laughing and smiling. Very enjoyable!

I’m also a big fan of escape rooms and am looking forward to solving another with my friends this year at the Escape Game on 5th Ave.

You know that song from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, “I Go To The Zoo”? No? Just me? Well, that’s me. The San Diego Zoo is amazing — and I’ve been to a lot of zoos. It’s really such a better zoo…

My favorite thing to do in San Diego is go to the beach to see the sunset!
