Under the Tents 2025: Marvel, Dan Veesenmeyer, Geeky Hooker, SmashJT, Robotech

We have a hefty edition of Under the Tents for you today. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. It’ll become a part of you. Or you’ll just find something really cool to check out during San Diego Comic-Con 2025. Either way, let’s get started with all the Comic-Con news you came for.

Here’s a look at what you might have missed:

  • Can’t wait for the full reveal of Patrick Ballestero’s biggest (literally) exclusive for the year? Well, he showed off a peek at the 12″x18″ exclusive — but good luck making out the details.

  • What’s an “Under the Tents” section without some crochet? Well, you don’t have to find out today, because The Geeky Hooker has the most adorbale crocheted critters this side of the galaxy — a Leia and a Porg. Make sure you follow along on social media during the con for your chance to take these two home.

  • YouTuber SmashJT is trying to avoid any further legal troubles by letting everyone know where he’s going to be in advance, which includes SDCC 2025. Take from that what you will.

  • Spike and Mike’s Festival of Animation will be holding two screenings in Room 32AB during San Diego Comic-Con this year. On Thursday, July 24, they’ll be showing the best clips of all time from Spike and Mike’s Festival of Animation from 2pm-3pm PT. Go back for a second helping on Friday, July 25, from 9am-11am PT when they’ll be showing the best from Spike and Mike’s Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation.

  • The Dark Side of the Force is the pathway to many abilities, some of which are considered to be… unnatural. There’s nothing unnatural about Star Wars artist Joe Corroney’s SDCC 2025 exclusive “The Republic vs the Separatists” celebrating the 20th anniversary of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith he’s bringing to the con with him.

  •  Despite any rumors you may hear to the contrary, Marvel will be present at SDCC 2025, at least on the Exhibit Hall floor. They confirmed they’ll be back with two booths this year — the usual #2329 and #2519 — which promise to immerse us into the world of the Fantastic Four this year. Will we get merch, though, is the real question.

  • Comic-Con legend Mark Evanier announced on his blog there will be a gathering during SDCC this year to remember the late Peter David, who passed away earlier this year on May 24.

  • Do you have a trading card that you know is worth something but need it authenticated? Leading third-party authenticator PSA has San Diego Comic-Con 2025 on their 2025 show schedule, where they’ll be providing their expert authentication services.

Monsterpalooza was a BLAST! Met so many cool people and artists! Hope to get in next year. My next big con is San Diego Comic Con in July!

  • Did you know the late Gene Hackman agreed to play the role of the Blind Man in Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein for minimum pay? What does that have to do with the artwork comic book artist Nephtali Leal shared for Guillermo del Torro’s Frankenstein SDCC 2025 souvenir book? Not much, but I think it’s a fun fact.

The first trailer for Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein is out, and it's amazing. Here's the illustration that was selected for the San Diego Comic-Con souvenir book. I hope you like [email protected] #frankenstein #art #digitalart #comic #comicon#conceptart #movies #netflix

  • Holy tea and biscuits, Batman! Well, not really; illustrator Syn has just ten sets of these adorable Robin wooden “cookies” magnet sets with tin boxes that she’s bringing with her to San Diego Comic-Con 2025.

  • Here’s a hot tip: Independent film Burned will be heating up the screen at this year’s Comic-Con International Film Festival. Careful — it’s a scorcher.

  • If you need something a little cooler, Chelsea Stone’s documentary Miss Fury and the Lost Legacy of Tarpé Mills has also been selected for a screening during SDCC’s Independent Film Festival this year.

I’ve been bursting to tell everyone this, and I finally can: my documentary, “Miss Fury and the Lost Legacy of Tarpé Mills,” will be playing at COMIC-CON FILM FESTIVAL in San Diego. I will also be doing a Q&A after the film. More details to come soon. I hope to see you there!!

  • And if you want some truly out-of-this-world news, short film Invasion ’53 — which follows a man-eating alien who crashes a suburban cocktail party — is also landing at the convention.

Just found out “Invasion ‘53” will be screening at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. I am in a flying saucer heading over the moon about this! Nerd dreams do come true! 🤓❤️🛸🤗

  • Artist/writer Jeff Lemire’s latest graphic novel, 10,000 Ink Stains: A Memoir, received a glowing review recently, which he was happy to share along with the news that the book will be available just in time for him to bring with him to Comic-Con this year.
  • A regular fixture in Artists’ Alley, comic book artist Sean Forney is bringing his Scarlet Huntress comic back to Table #EE-03 at SDCC 2025.
  • ABRAMS Comics Arts will be hosting two of San Diego Comic-Con 2025’s Special Guests, Chip Kidd and Michael Cho, at Booth #1216 during the con this year.

  • If you’re an artist attending SDCC this year and would like X-Men 97 artist Dan Veesenmeyer to review your portfolio, he’ll be offering his wisdom and guidance in the Portfolio Reviews area in the Sails Pavilion.

  • FLASH! AAAHHHH! Only 500 copies of artist Peter Smith’s Flash Gordon cover collaboration with Mad Cave Studios will be flying into SDCC 2025, so make like the Hawk Men and DIIIIIIVE for one early.

  • What do cybersecurity and pop culture have to do with one another? Well, a lot honestly, if you’re a fan of Mr. Robot and other TV, movies, and comics that delve into the world of hacking. Join Alethe Denis, a Senior Security Consultant at Bishop Fox, for the panel “Inside the Hacker’s Mind: Cybersecurity, Culture, and the Code Behind the Chaos” as they delve into the connection between hacking and pop culture.

  • Are you in need of a smart, funny TV writer for your panel at San Diego Comic-Con? The Emmy and Peabody nominated writer Joey Clift, (Spirit Rangers, Molly of Denali, PAW Patrol) is offering his services.

  • If you’ve got original comic art sitting around at home that you keep meaning to sell — Hake’s Auctions wants to know. You can consign with them now to be a part of their booth and an auction taking place from July 29-30.

  • We first showed you Gecko Adams’, the creator of Keenspot, new tee a few weeks ago — but now it looks like the Hero Hiro shirts are in stock and ready for San Diego Comic-Con.

  • Let’s give a warm welcome to cartoonist Grant Snider, who is heading to his first-ever San Diego Comic-Con, for his book Poetry Comics (which is nominated for an Eisner Award!). You’ll find signed copies of it at the Chronicle Books booth, and he’ll be on hand at the Abrams ComicsArts panel to discuss comics and graphic artists.

THIS INK RUNS COLD’s limited edition “liner notes” supplement, THE BRUSH-OFFS, has arrived! We’ll have ‘em at SDCC, but you’ll get one FREE with any pledge over $60 at the @kickstarter link: www.kickstarter.com/projects/all…

  • Finally (for now) — forget the King of the Monsters, what about the Queen of the Monsters? Marcia Middleton will be presenting a panel on “Female Kaiju in the Godzilla Universe”.
