Under the Tents 2025: Maria Wolf, Priscilla Wilson, Valiant Comics, Pudgy Penguins

Hey friends, I’m super jazzed about being able to bring you the first “Under the Tents” of July 2025. It’s always cause for celebration when we can say “San Diego Comic-Con is THIS MONTH!”

But it’s also scary too, because (if you’re like me) you worry about missing out on stuff. You’re picking up your phone more often, seeing notifications more often, and in general just trying to keep up with it all, and it’s not easy. We get it. The perfect SDCC takes a lot of work and a lot of luck. I can’t help you with the luck part, but I know our team has put in a lot of work to find all this great news for you.

Let’s get started:

  • It’s a baby! Priscilla Wilson tweeted a birth announcement, announcing the imminent arrival of the sweet tanuki Shibui. We can’t get enough of Shibui’s little hat. Congratulations, Priscilla, on your newest arrival. Watch our dedicated post for full details soon.

  • Jonathan Bolerjack is busy, busy man. In addition to running Ronin Club, he’s also bringing some variant covers to SDCC. He will have Wolverine #4 and All New Venom #1 both by Bengus. Each book will feature spot foil treatments on the covers. One lucky person will also be able to purchase one of the Venom variants signed by Todd McFarlane.

  • 🎵It’s the lean, green, ninja team, on the scene, cool teens doin’ ninja things!🎵 Or maybe it’s just Alex Deligiannis and more T.M.N.T. work-in-progress shots! Can’t stop these radical dudes!

  • Here comes BB-Cre.8 again, doing their teasey-tease thing! This story from Instagram says “reveals coming in July.” Guess what, BB-Cre.8? *taps on watch* It’s July! Make like a droid and get rollin’!

  • The prolific and popular cartoonist Steve McGarry is prepping for San Diego Comic-Con and that includes digging up some older treasures, like this Rod Stewart piece from his syndicated Biographic strip, created with ink on Bristol board and measuring 17″ x 13″.

  • While speaking on the Word Balloon podcast, writer Christopher Cantwell divulged that he will be at San Diego Comic-Con doing signings every day for Oni Press (who published his stellar Out of Alcatraz comic), on DC panel, doing a podcast with Elijah Wood.
  • Concept artist and illustrator Penelope “Peng Peng” Gaylord is packing up her goodies for Comic-Con, including the cheerful “Tigger” Lorcana cards she created. You better spring over to her booth if you want on, she doesn’t have many!

  • The lighthearted card game Delegate Dash recently posted on their Facebook page that they will be running demos of their game during San Diego Comic-Con. All the demo gaming takes place next door to the Convention Center at the Marriott Marquis and Marina.

  • Valiant Comics fans have something to look forward to at San Diego Comic-Con. After Valiant became a publishing publisher with Alien Books, things were on the upswing but the long-running bankruptcy issues revolving around comic distributor Diamond Comics put Alien (and dozens of other small publishers) in a rough spot. Luckily, the good folks at IDW Publishing, who already have a distribution deal with Penguin Random House, have taken Alien Books under their wing and soon there will once again be Valiant Comics on the shelves at your local comic shop. To celebrate, fans can head over to the IDW booth to pick up a free copy of Valiant Beyond Preview Edition, featuring select scenes from new series Bloodshot, Tales of the Shadowman, and X-O Manowar while supplies last.  Only 2,000 copies will be available at booth #2729.

  • Hey, no diving in the shallow end! He might be the richest duck in the world, but that doesn’t make him the smartest! This Uncle Scrooge classic diving into riches pose is brought to you by artist James Silvani. You can find this and all his original masterpieces at booth #ii-06 in Artist Alley.

  • While you’re there checking out the art, make sure to pick up a copy of Silvani’s new graphic novel, Pirates: A Graphic History. We are so excited to hear they arrived in time for the show.

  • Another artist with all their “ducks in a row” this year is BeKyoot who has confirmed on Twitter that their books have all been sent to print and should arrive in time for the big show.

  • Ethan Castillo has us in his web again. The young artist prodigy has practically grown up in Artist Alley, and you can stop by his booth in Artist Alley to celebrate his 11th year exhibiting and to pick up these Spider-Man pieces.

  • But Ethan Castillo is not a one-trick pony — and he doesn’t only do Spider-Men. You’ll be saying “Yes, Chef!” to this The Bear piece, available at #AA-01 in Artist Alley.

  • I said brr! It’s cold in here! There must be some Pudgy Penguins in the atmosphere! Okay, wrong property, but we’re excited that Sr. Manager of Mythical Games has confirmed that Pudgy Penguins is coming back to play at San Diego Comic-Con, with a booth, and possibly exclusives. Waddle over to booth #4215 to find out.

  • To the world. And to Martin Hsu’s Good Omens Cats, which he teased on social. Slink your way on over to Booth #4530 to pick it up in person.

  • Shiny! The California Browncoats are returning to San Diego Comic-Con with panels, signings, giveaways, karaoke, and more. Find them on the show floor at #A-7, where they’ll have an in-booth signing with illustrator Geoffrey Mandel, as well as giveaways and auctions throughout the con to support charity: water. Then, they’ll be back for their annual Dr. Horrible Sing-Along panel. And while details haven’t been announced, there’s also a Browncoat Board Game Night — and we’re ready.

  • Cartoonist (and favorite of these pug-loving writers) Gemma Correll won’t have her own booth but will be signing and sketching at the Cartoon Art Museum booth, #1634 during San Diego Comic-Con. Find her there with fellow cartoonist Jodi Tong on Friday, July 25 from 2 – 3 pm.

  • This sweet little cosplay cat sticker from artist Nellie Lê (one of her most popular) will be making it’s triumphant return to SDCC this year. Additionally, those not able to attend the event will want to check out Nellie’s store this weekend for some presale opportunities.

  • Aggie Cheung of The Little Red House is bringing some whimsical delight to San Diego Comic-Con with these hand-painted ceramic cups. Each one is a work of art, but there are only 15 available, so scamper to booth #o-12 for first dibs.

  • Television and film actress Jackie Dallas (The Hunting Wives, Stranger Things, The Resident, NCIS New Orleans) is preparing for a full weekend of signing autographs. She will be stationed in the Autograph Area up in the Sails Pavilion all days of the convention.

  • And finally today, comic creator Sean Forney just keeps adding to the selection of items he’ll have at San Diego Comic-Con, including a Scarlet Huntress Meets Wendigo ashcan and his very popular Scarlet Huntress Box Sets, a curated selection of Scarlet Huntress Meets Mothman comics, stickers and more. You can find them in Artist Alley at #EE-03, or in Small Press at booth #K-03.
