EXCLUSIVE: Horror Gets Playful in “Dread the Hall H” Sequel’s Board Game

This summer, horror comes back to Hall H.

No, we’re not talking about the overnight camping just to get into the room, we’re talking about the annual horror anthology spin-off Dread the Hall H, from writer Jordan Hart, along with collaborator Chris Ryall, returning for its gruesome sequel on Wednesday, July 22.

Inside the 48-page special from Syzygy/Image Comics, you’ll find convention-related tales of terror illustrated by Luana Vecchio (Lovesick), C.P. Wilson III (The Stuff of Legend), Marianna Ignazzi (CHACHU), and Tom Williams, with a selection of covers from Maria Wolf, Jordan Hart, and more.

“Each Dread the Hall H story centers on familiar convention experiences — celebrity panels, show exclusives, overnight sidewalk camping, sleep deprivation — and pushes them to absurd levels of satire and horror,” said co-creator Hart (also writer of the Harvey and Eisner-nominated Ripple Effects).

But tucked into the heart of this terrifying tome is something unexpected, something playful. Illustrator Chris Anderson has created “Conland,” a Candyland-style game board, complete with instructions, that attendees can enjoy while waiting in line. With art reminiscent of the iconic games by Parker Brothers in the 1970’s, Anderson provides all the unsettling details needed to draw you even more into this “dread”ful adventure.

“I consider myself a fan first, like most comic creators,” Hart told us. “So every year at SDCC I find myself waiting in a line for an exclusive or two — last year it was for the Tron: Ares vinyl. We all know that lines are a part of every comic convention. I thought a board game that celebrates the pursuit of exclusives, and all of the things you encounter along the way, would be something every congoer would relate to. So, I included some of the moments I’ve seen while standing in line over the years, from an entire horde of zombie cosplayers to the cast of Justice League passing by.”

From the dollar bins to the concession, no aspect of the convention experience is overlooked as you navigate through the “Zombie Hoards” towards your goal at the “Exclusive Estate” while you try to avoid the dastardly “Line Break Crossings,” but still keep your eyes peeled for all that sweet, sweet swag.

With the addition of one 20-sided-die (not included), this little added bonus to Dread the Hall H was made to enjoy while waiting in line at the show, or at home with friends.

Dread the Hall H can be pre-ordered from your local comic book store and will release on Wednesday, July 22, just in time for San Diego Comic-Con.
