Question of the Week #7: What Was Your Favorite Panel Moment at SDCC?

In an effort to feature more attendees, rather than featuring just one per week, we’re featuring lots of you! We’ll have a new question each week, so be sure to keep an eye on our social media channels for each week’s question. Without further ado, let’s get into this week’s question:

One of my favorites is when the Avgn James Rolfe took time to take pictures with the fans!

How about when I could see Kevin Conroy say, “I AM BATMAN!”

I also loved when they did the Archer and Bobs Burgers panels one after the other, when the voice for Archer/Bob leave one panel and right after that return!

In 2022, I was lucky to take a picture of Danny Devito. He was such a hilarious guy!

The first panel from Smiling Friends when they started drawing.

In 2024 I went to “The Many Deaths of Sean Bean”, which was hilarious!

Last year two of my favorite panels of all time were the anniversary of Avatar, when they started signing “SECRET TUNNEL!” And the Acme vs Coyote, all the little interactions with “the acme lawyer”.

My favorite panel moment of SDCC is hands down the Spotlight Panel with J. Michael Straczynski (JMS) in 2012. Where else could you find literally Riverdancing zombies?  This was when JMS was telling fans about projects he was developing and a troupe of Irish dancers came out and danced with a clip of Riverdance on the big screen.  JMS panels are always fun but this was magic!

I ventured out on my own to get to the Mai Corland panel in the hopes of getting an autograph. After getting conflicting information in the guide, which said you had to get tickets in the morning, but nobody working there knew anything and wouldn’t help me. So after being frustrated, I finally decided to just go to the afternoon panel and see if I could figure it out myself and get lucky enough to get my books signed. They talked about how they got into writing and a little about their new books coming out as well as giving advice to those aspiring to become writers. It was a wonderful panel (my first ever panel by myself).

Afterwards I was able to not only get ALL 3 books of the Broken Blades series, but Mai Corland was impressed that I brought all of them from Houston to be signed.

I have so many, but I’m going to go with the Marvel Spider-Man 2 Hall H panel from 2023. It had Yuri Lowenthal doing the “Bully Parker” dance from Spider-Man 3, Najid Jeter, and the amazing Tony (Candyman) Todd. The two best moments from that panel were when the Spider-Man PS5 edition was announced, and later Tony Todd did the “We…are…Venom”.

Afterwards those in attendance got to go to a signing at the Marvel booth where the voice cast of the game signed an awesome poster. I had an opportunity to hold up the line for a couple of minutes to speak with Tony Todd (his fault) after I made him laugh by telling him that “Candyman doesn’t bother anyone as long as you keep his name out your mouth.” Unfortunately, as we all know, he passed the following year, and I cherish that moment that I got to chat with a legend.

One of my favorite moments came from the AEW panel at SDCC 2024. Mercedes Moné in Poison Ivy cosplay throws down with Dr. Britt Baker!

I enjoyed a lot of panels last year. With Marvel not attending last year, I was able to sit in a lot more than my first year with RDJ coming out as Dr Doom.

I would say the panel with Paul Feig and Rob Reiner was one of my favorites. Hearing two passionate directors tell stories of their craft is always inspiring and wonderful. With the tragic passing of Rob in late ‘25, I appreciate sitting in that panel more because I got to hear from a director of phenomenal films like The Princess Bride and This Is Spinal Tap.

Other favorite panels from last year were Project Hail Mary and Coyote Vs Acme. Never thinking CVA would see the light of day, we got Wile E Coyote to come out and answer questions and the entire spectacle of “the movie ACME doesn’t want you to see.” Right, lol. That was good fun. Then a small panel of Ryan Gosling, Andy Weir, Lord & Miller, and Drew Goddard felt so intimate even though it was in Hall H.

I have had a lot of favorite moments, but one of the best was being in a small room with Stan Lee as he promoted his “Who Wants to be a Superhero” show.

Waiting through four panels to see The Rook panel with the hope to get a pic with Olivia Munn!!! After each panel was over I got closer and closer to the stage and got a good spot for The Rook panel and eventually got a pic with her afterwards!!! Fyi: Panels before were pretty good too!!!

There were so many panels that I have loved throughout the years but the one that stood out was a small panel for Sharknado 2 in 2014. I was able to bring my Sharknado cosplay and adapt it to the second movie. I got real lucky and they picked me to ask the last question to the panel.

The panel consisted of the director, Ian Zering and Vivica A. Fox. For some reason, Vivica Fox thought I was the iCloud and couldn’t quite figure out that I was a Sharknado. (Please note: someone on the floor thought I was a tampon). I had a great interaction with the cast and the fans in the audience. Even some producers took pics with me. What was cool was that someone from the Ublog taped part of it and posted it to YouTube. It was an incredible Comic-Con experience.

One of my favorite panel moments was Loki’s surprise appearance in Hall H.

The lights suddenly went out, and at first I assumed it was just going to be a video featuring the cast. Then a voice began speaking, and when it restarted, I figured there must have been some kind of technical difficulty.  I thought it was simply a recording being played over the speakers.

Then the lights came back on.

Standing there was Loki himself, portrayed by Tom Hiddleston, completely in character. I was absolutely stunned and actually gasped when I realized he was standing there live in Hall H.

The crowd erupted. To this day, it’s probably the loudest I’ve ever heard Hall H. What made it even more incredible was that moments later he silenced the entire room simply by putting a finger to his lips. Tom Hiddleston had the audience completely eating out of the palm of his hand.

One of the funniest moments came when a man in the audience proudly announced that his wife loved Tom Hiddleston. It was one of the few times he seemed to break character, and the crowd’s reaction only made the moment more memorable.

I’ve seen a lot of incredible panels over the years, but the surprise, excitement, and energy of Loki’s Hall H appearance remain one of my favorite panel moments.

Comic-Con is like pizza; there’s really no such thing as a bad version of it. I love the entire experience, including the ups and downs.

A perfect example was the Deadpool & Wolverine Celebration of Life screening. We arrived early and managed to get on the shuttles despite the disorganized lines and issues with the QR codes not scanning. Once we arrived, we were lucky enough to get great seats.

Unfortunately, not everyone in our group made it inside, which was disappointing. But for those of us who did, it was an unforgettable experience and a reminder of everything Comic-Con has to offer.

There was cool swag, surprise cast appearances, and the chance to experience the premiere alongside 6,700 passionate fans.

For me, that’s what makes Comic-Con special. It’s not just the panel or the screening itself, it’s the entire adventure that comes with it.

With Pokémon celebrating its 30th anniversary, my absolute favorite SDCC memory has to be the first-ever Pokémon: Bringing Animation to Global Audiences panel on Thursday, July 20, 2023 (11:45 am-12:45 pm) held in Room 6BCF at the San Diego Convention Center.

Before it even started, the crowd went wild when Jason Paige’s iconic theme song started playing on screens.

Led by moderator Meghan Camarena (Strawburry17), The Pokémon Company International team — Taito Okiura (vice president of marketing and business development), Andy Gose (senior director of media production), and Hilary Thomas (senior producer) — hosted a beautiful tribute to the 25-year legacy of Ash Ketchum and his partner, Pikachu. They even showcased a trailer of the 11-episode miniseries, Pokémon: To Be a Pokémon Master featuring Ash, Pikachu, and their longtime friends Misty and Brock in their final adventures). They then passed the torch to next generation heroes of Liko, Roy, and the Rising Volt Tacklers from Pokémon Horizons.

Attendees were treated to an exclusive trio of reveals:

  • The first English trailer of the new show
  • A behind-the-scenes video made just for the room
  • The first eleven minutes of the premiere episode (“The Pendant That Starts It All: Part One”) in English

The aftermath was unforgettable. Outside of the room, I met panelist Hilary Thomas, who is not only a senior producer, but also the voice of the talking Pikachu in the animated special, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Team Go-Getters Out of the Gate! (2006). We talked for a minute about the franchise as well as the 2006 special and ended the interaction with a selfie.

It’s so incredible to think that I got to live through this world-changing franchise while meeting and reuniting with fellow fans. It remains my absolute favorite Comic-Con memory.

I still remember my first ever San Diego Comic-Con, all the way back in 2010. I was fresh out of college, and finally wanted to attend the convention I’d spent so many years hearing about, for my favorite TV show at the moment: Psych. I read everything I possibly could about lining up early (I am nothing if not a researcher and over-planner!), and wound up being able to get second row for the panel, alongside my convention roommate (Sarah, who would go on to become one of my dearest friends in the world, and who is also the resident graphic artist here at the UBlog).

It was everything I had hoped for and beyond, with star Dule Hill tap-dancing on stage, and the cast all in high spirits and excited to be there. The energy of just being in that room, with fellow fans who loved this show as much as I did, was a high I’ve spent 16 years chasing after. That panel opened up my entire world, and is the entire reason this site has continued to exist and thrive.
