Keep your eyes peeled, because something strange is lurking in the Gaslamp.
Artist Gus Fink has spent more than two decades creating wonderfully weird worlds, with his creepy-and-cute work appearing everywhere from toys and comics to clothing and films. His latest creation, “Kreepy Cuddles”, introduces a cast of stitched-together creatures who proudly wear their scars, celebrating the idea that our imperfections are what make us unique. Now, those creatures are breaking out of the toy aisle and into the streets of San Diego for an interactive Comic-Con treasure hunt.
On Friday, July 24 from 4pm-8pm, Fink is inviting fans to search the Gaslamp Quarter for eleven escaped “Kreepy Cuddles” creatures hidden throughout downtown.
Every 20 minutes, Fink will release a new clue on Instagram and TikTok, introducing another “Kreepy Cuddles” character and pointing hunters toward its location. If you find one of the original sketches, it’s yours to keep.
The hunt centers around Fink himself, who will be painting live on Fifth Avenue between F and G Streets throughout the event. Then, at 8pm, he’ll unveil the twelfth “Kreepy Cuddles” creature as it’s painted live for the first time, completing the story that has unfolded across the Gaslamp all evening.
Finding one of the eleven originals is no small feat. Fink rarely parts with his original artwork, which can fetch as much as $25,000 each, making this one of the few opportunities for fans to own an original piece straight from the artist.
Even if you don’t track down a creature, there are still prizes to be had. Fink will be giving away 100 SDCC-exclusive “Kreepy Cuddles” collectibles while supplies last, along with a $500 cash prize for one lucky attendee.
