Stargate Fans Bring #SaveStargate Campaign to San Diego Comic-Con

Stargate fans aren’t giving up without a fight. The grassroots #SaveStargate campaign is bringing its efforts to San Diego Comic-Con this year.

The push comes after Amazon MGM Studios canceled the planned Stargate revival from showrunner Martin Gero earlier this summer, prompting fans around the world to rally in hopes of convincing the studio to reconsider.

Since then, the fan-led movement has organized flyovers over Amazon MGM Studios in Culver City, rallies in front of fan-funded billboards in New York City, and international events across Europe. Organizers say the campaign has also been fueled by a fan petition that has gathered nearly 115,000 signatures, along with coordinated social media efforts to keep #SaveStargate in the spotlight.

On Friday, July 24, the campaign is heading to San Diego Comic-Con with a banner flyover above the San Diego Convention Center from 11am-1pm.

Later that afternoon, fans can gather at Bay City Brewery (627 Eighth Ave) for a #SaveStargate Happy Hour rooftop event from 6pm-9pm, with organizers teasing “surprises” throughout the day. No Comic-Con badge is required to attend, and all fans are welcome.

The campaign hopes the San Diego events will continue building momentum for a franchise that spans more than 30 years, from the original 1994 Stargate film to Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, Stargate Universe, and beyond. Additional events are also planned, including a presence at Dragon Con in Atlanta and Rose City Comic Con in Portland.

Whether the movement ultimately changes Amazon MGM’s plans remains to be seen, but fans are making it clear they’re not ready to close the gate just yet.
