Under the Tents 2024: Rainbow Brite, Don Nguyen, Martin Hsu, MeTV

If you’re expecting new SDCC news, you found it, but it’s old new news. New old news? Anyway, everything old is new again this year at San Diego Comic-Con. This edition of Under the Tents is full of retro news that includes Rainbow Brite as well as every other Saturday morning cartoon your parents and/or grandparents used to watch. Of course, we also have some insanely brilliant art from Don Nguyen, Martin Hsu, and a lot of other talented SDCC artists.

Here’s a look at what you might have missed:

  • If his Appearances schedule is to be believed (and I don’t see why it wouldn’t), you’ll find writer/artist Jim Zub in Artists’ Alley at Table #GG-07/#GG-08 with ComicSketchArt during SDCC this year.

  • Another ComicSketchArt talent attending SDCC this year is comic book writer David Pepose. Look for him in the same spot (Artists’ Alley Table #GG-07/#GG-08).

  • I’ve got my eye on you. Entity Eye, that is, comprised of comic creator Suzy Stein and Fernando Perez, has San Diego Comic-Con on their Summer 2024 tour schedule.

  • So no one told you life was gonna be this way. Your jobs a joke, you’re broke, your love life’s D.O.A. It’s good to have friends who’ll be there for you, like Don Nguyen and his friends on the Exhibit Hall Floor at SDCC this year.

  • Another comic book agency that brings heat to SDCC each year is Felix Comic Art. This year, they’re bringing legendary artist Matías Bergara to Booth #4612 on the Exhibit Hall floor for his first-ever San Diego Comic-Con appearance.

  • Another brilliant artist appearing at Booth #4612 during SDCC this year is Filipe Andrade. Will he open his sketch list? Watch our Commissions post to find out if/when he does.

  • When I was growing up, my sister subjected me to two forms of animated torture. One was Strawberry Shortcake (to this day, the smell of strawberries triggers me). The other was the magical Rainbow Brite, who is celebrating her 40th anniversary this year with, among other things, “a presence at some of the biggest conventions, such as San Diego Comic-Con.” Tell your moms and your grand-moms, kids.

  • Another blast from the past is coming to Comic-Con from retro streamers MeTV, who want to bring back our Saturday morning uneducational cartoons with their new MeTV Toons channel. According to streaming news service Next TV, MeTV Toons has plans to spill all the tea at an SDCC panel this year as part of their summer promotional tour following the service’s launch on June 15.

  • Another local San Diego artist you’ll find on the Exhibit Hall floor is Celine Chapus, better known for her penchant for eccentric headwear, Purple Top Hat. Look for her in Artists’ Alley at Table #BB-04.

  • SDCC artist Martin Hsu was excited to show off his first Comic-Con 2024 exclusive to his Twitter feed. Look for this beautiful custom piece he had made just for the show at Booth #4530.

  • Artist Robert Hendrickson took the moment from Rogue One when the Rebel Alliance saw that the light at the end of the tunnel wasn’t an oncoming train but something much, much worse and immortalized it into an amazing print, “Holding Hope.” You can find this beautiful nightmare at Acme Archives Limited Booth #5629.
