Under the Tents 2024: X-Men ’97 Voice Cast, Kaveh Taherian, Jenny Frison, BeKyoot, Unknown Comics, Lev Grossman

Depending on where you are in the world, this could be the last Under the Tents of June 2024 or the very first one of July 2024. No matter what side of the International Date Line you reside, it’s still full of all kinds of useful SDCC information, including lots of comic variant covers you will be able to purchase, a handful of voice actors that will be signing, authors on book tours, enamel pins, and much more. So jump right in, the water’s fine!

Let’s take a look at the news:

  • Sometimes it’s not easy to find a booth by the number. GG-07? SP F-21? 2345? We need landmarks, not letters and numbers! Well it looks like BeKyoot is working on some cute signage and standees that you can use to help you find them. They will also make for a great photo-op! For those of you not navigationally challenged, they will be at booth #2449.

  • Prepare to be astounded by this SDCC exclusive variant cover for Zatanna: Bring Down the House #2 by the artist virtuoso Jenny Frison. Brought to the con by Comic Inspiration and Bird City Comics, this virgin foil variant cover is limited to 1000 copies. You’ll have to pull $30 out of a hat to score yourself one.

  • ANZ Comics is teaming up with Essential Sequential for a handful of San Diego Comic-Con exclusives from the master Art Adams. Although we’ve already shown off their X-Men #1 (LE 3000) and Thundercats: Cheeara (LE 500 of both virgin cover and virgin sketch cover), you will be able to pre-order them on ANZ Comics’ site beginning this Friday, July 5 at 10am PT.

  • A very. very limited San Diego Comic-Con exclusive “Game of Death” version of Tikumo from Gerald Okamura will be dropping on Wednesday, July 24. The package comes signed and numbered, limited to 15 pieces with the price to be determined.

  • The Her Universe Fashion Show never fails to impress with its couture, but also with its décor and lobby. This year, according to these emojis, the Mattel sponsored show will have a Polly Pocket themed lobby.

  • The God of Thunder always has to make an entrance. Chris Maze has depicted Thor about to throw that hammer down in this 3″x3″ original piece, set to debut at Comic-Con. The one-of-a-kind mixed media piece will come framed and be available at booth #2103.

  • Artist Stanley “Artgerm” Lau will be doing commissions while at San Diego Comic-Con, according to this reel on Facebook. Watching Artgerm work is a treat in an of itself.

  • Comic creator and illustrator Dailen Ogden will have a new pin available at San Diego Comic-Con, based on their graphic novel WifWulf, which you’ll also want to check out while you’re there.

  • Illustrator for IDW’s Sonic the Hedgehog and My Little Pony series, Natalie Haines, recently tweeted out a new convention schedule and SDCC is on the docket. Stay tuned for details!

  • The paragons of parody, the Hillywood sisters, will be bringing their Hillywood Show live to San Diego Comic-Con for signings as well as a panel on Friday, July 27. Exact details should be revealed two weeks prior to the event.

  • We’ve all been prepping for SDCC in our own way and it looks like artist Sean Forney spent his weekend assembling his Scarlet Huntress Meets Mothman limited edition boxes. These will be making their convention debut in San Diego at Small Press booth K-03.

  • The timing is perfect for New York Times bestselling author Lev Grossman (The Magicians, Silver Arrow) Grossman will be on tour for his new book, The Bright Sword, a reimagining of the King Arthur legend for the new millennium. His book tour crossed the continent and ends in sunny San Diego, presumably as part of Penguin Random House’s BookWorld. More details soon. 

  • Tucked within this Instagram post by artist Ray Caburnay is the announcement that he will be appearing on a panel during San Diego Comic-Con, on Thursday, July 25. The subject, location, and time will remain a mystery for now.

  • Karen Hallion will be having daily enamel pins for San Diego Comic-Con, but that’s not enough. She’d like to finish this work in progress of Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn styled after Klimt’s “The Kiss.” Let’s cheer Hallion on for this amazing idea and encourage her to get it done.

  • Unknown Comics has another eye-catching Nathan Szerdy variant cover that will be available at SDCC, this time it’s a foil virgin variant for Phoenix #1. Booth #4901 and #2834 will both be the place to go to snag this one.

  • They won’t just be slinging variants over at Unknown Comics (though they do have some of the best I’ve seen so far) — they will also have several comic book creators and voice actors on hand for signings. The previously mentioned Nathan Szerdy will be there, as well as artist David Nakayama. Find them both at booth #4901.
  • The Cartoon Voices panel is traditionally one of the most well attended, and most fun, panels at San Diego Comic-Con. Thanks to this tweet, we now know that voice actor Piotr Michael (Young Jedi Adventures) will be participating.

  • Over in Artist Alley, at Booth #BB-02, you’ll find author and illustrator Kaveh Taherian. He’s bringing some SDCC exclusives, including two brand new prints which feature his original characters reimagined in the style of two of his favorite artists, John Romita Jr. and Bruce Timm.

  • Memoirist Soizick Jaffre will be making a stop at the Stacked Deck Press booth, #2144, where you can find copies of her graphic novel A Good Sport.

  • Marat Mychaels posted to Facebook to show off a pair of Deadpool and Wolverine inspired variant covers for Do You Pooh.

  • Marvel and DC cover artist Chris Hardin laid out his summer schedule on Facebook and San Diego Comic-Con made the cut. See you there, Chris!

  • And finally today, artist Adi Granov won’t be too hard to spot at SDCC, just look for this giant banner featuring the art from his variant cover for X-Men #1 which will also be a con exclusive from Trinity Comics.
