The city of San Diego now has its own official edition of MONOPOLY, unveiled last week at a special event aboard the USS Midway Museum. The release adds San Diego to Hasbro licensee Top Trumps’ growing lineup of city-specific editions, each customized with local landmarks, institutions, and cultural touchstones. Among the most notable inclusions is the San Diego Convention Center, which earns a coveted spot on the board — a fitting nod to one of the city’s most recognizable destinations and the annual home of San Diego Comic-Con.
In attendance at the release event was Mr. Monopoly himself, posing for photos and showing off the new game, as well as team members from the locations featured on the board, and San Diego Mayor, Todd Gloria. Yes, there were some jokes about the Free Parking space on the board, a recent hot topic in the city.
@outside.comic.con The release of the new San Diego edition of Monopoly aboard the USS Midway Museum! (That’s the GOOD kind of Monopoly — depending on who you’re playing with of course!) The MONOPOLY: San Diego Edition replaces the perennial board game’s squares, from Boardwalk to Park Place, with San Diego cultural sites, historic landmarks, charitable organizations, and businesses. Among the locations on the board are the Gaslamp Quarter and the San Diego Convention Center (possibly our personal favorites), as well as Coronado Beach, Birch Aquarium, SeaWorld, Belmont Park, and of course the San Diego Zoo.
While the playing pieces are classic MONOPOLY, this game features customized Community Chest and Chance playing cards to ensure the board is an enduring tribute to America’s Finest City.
How to Buy: The game is available locally in San Diego at Hallmark stores, the USS Midway Museum, Broken Yolk locations, Geppetto’s toy shops, and Barnes & Noble stores. You can also find the game on Amazon.
