Hotelpocalypse 2018 Recap: Trends, Next Steps, More

Hotelpocalpyse always reminds us of an internet meme – Spiders Georg. For those of you who maybe don’t inhabit the dark corner of the internet that is tumblr, it basically goes something like this:

“average person eats 3 spiders a year” factoid actually (sic) just statistical error. average person eats 0 spiders per year. Spiders Georg, who lives in cave & eats over 10,000 each day, is an outlier and should not have been countedā€

So, why are we talking about eating spiders instead of San Diego Comic-Con? Because trying to make sense of the results of the General Hotel Sale (aka Hotelpocalypse), and why XYZ got an e-mail today but ABC didn’t, it always a bit of a guessing game. There areĀ trends to be seen, certainly – but then you hear wild stories that make you think onPeak employees are just sitting around throwing darts at a wall. And basically, while those stories are very interesting and really weird, they’re also Spiders Georg: They’re outliers.

For the most part, we don’t think they actually are throwing darts at a wall. There’sĀ some logic to it, even if we can’t always see it. For instance, the vast majority of those who received an e-mail today were those who received access to the form within the first two minutes. The earlier the time stamp, the more likely you were to receive one of your top choices.

If you were lucky enough to receive a hotel today, and you want to keep it, make sure you place your deposit no later than Thursday, April 12 at 11:59PM PT (and we’d really recommend sooner than that).

However, there are lots of individuals who gained access to the form around 9:01 or 9:02 who did not receive e-mails in Round 1 e-mails. So if you’re in that boat, or later, don’t panic yet – a second wave of e-mails will go out on Monday, April 16. Last year, many in the second wave still received downtown and Gaslamp hotels.

And then, of course, there’s the Spiders Georg’s of the world, who leave the rest of us scratching our heads.

Hotelpocalypse is far from over. We’ve still got to get through the second wave of e-mails on Monday, April 16. If you still don’t receive anything then, onPeak will let you know if you couldn’t be placed no later than Monday, April 23. Somewhere in there, onPeak will also contact those on the waiting list with alternative options.

And if you don’t get onto the waiting list, you’reĀ still not out of luck, as there other options available to you. However, we’ll be discussing those in a few weeks.

For now, maybe just hope you’re a Spiders Georg.
