Under the Tents: Funko, The Geeky Hooker, Kneady Bakers, Wizards of the Coast, Cancer Gets LOST

We’ve received some positive feedback on our Under the Tents posts, and we are humbled and flattered by it. We here at the SDCC Unofficial Blog love what we do, and when you love it, too, it means the world to us. We love sharing that info with you, and we’re going to keep doing it for as long as possible.

If you’d like to give us the chance to show that appreciation, don’t forget our informal meet-up happening on Preview Night, 2 Blog 2 Furious. RSVP to our Facebook Event to let us know you’ll be there.

Here’s a look at what you might have missed:

  • I’m Mary Poppins, y’all!” If you’ve seen Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2, you know that’s arguably the best line in the movie. It’s certainly one Michael Rooker will never live down as an actor. The Geeky Hooker has thrown her hat into the ring with her “Yondu Poppins” critter. Your favorite whistling Ravager will be flying into SDCC as one of her critter drops, so if you want to catch him, follow The Geeky Hooker’s Twitter and/or Facebook feeds. Yondu Poppins may not have a spoonful of sugar for your children, but at least he’ll keep the other Ravagers from eating them.
  • Funko Funatics! Save this date! Funko finally revealed that June 5 will be the magical date when they announce their SDCC 2017 exclusives (almost definitely). Keep your eyes on Funko’s Twitter feed (and ours) for all the Funko Pop! SDCC goodness.

  • The Kneady Bakers make our stomachs growl louder than a wookie’s roar with their tease of their Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Wookies (they’re “Chewy”). These could be part of their SDCC treat boxes that will be available at Comic-Con this year. Don’t forget that $1 for every box sold is donated to Operation Smile. Just don’t rip somebody’s arm out of their socket trying to get one.

  • If chocolate chip cookies aren’t your thing (hey, could happen), The Kneady Bakers also showed us their Shaun of the Shortbread box available for SDCC pre-order. Hopefully, these zombie cookies don’t eat you back.

  • Magic: The Gathering fans, start tapping your manna. The Global Content and Community Manager for Magic: The Gathering confirmed that there will some SDCC exclusive cards coming again this year, presumably from Hasbro. Why break with tradition?

  • Comic series Voracious shared Jason Strutz’s concepts for his pin-ups set to debut at SDCC this year. They’ll be part of the Voracious Appetite for Destruction ashcan, and we’re excited to see the finished product. Oh! Here it is.

  • Manga visual artist Mako Fufu tweeted her list of upcoming cons. Of course, SDCC 2017 was on the list. Look for her at the Girls Drawin’ Girls booth as well as her art in the Art Show located in Sails Pavilion.

  • Vault Collectibles tweeted a tease that they will announce their first SDCC 2017 exclusive by artist Dave Dorman soon. What’s in their vault? We’ll have to wait and see.

  • Artist Ryan Callanan posted a work-in-progress of some figures he’s painting for SDCC 2017. Looks like Casual Friday on the Death Star.

  • Insomnia for artist Rhiannon Owens means more SDCC 2017 art for us. Here is her Elektra print she’ll have available at Comic-Con.

  • When the Rebels destroyed the Death Star at the Battle of Yavin 40 years ago today, many Stormtroopers lost their jobs just because they couldn’t find two droids. Artist Jason Adams captures this perfectly in his latest cardback for SDCC 2017, “Unemployed Stormtrooper.” I hope his résumé is up to date.

  • Artist Sho Murase showed us the first of her designs for the DC Artist Alley vinyl collection. She also encourages us to check out the other artists involved in this project.

  • Artist Camilla d’Errico posted a work-in-progress video from her new “Surreal Safari” series, Rainbow Lion. Look for this one when she comes to SDCC this year.

  • Finally, Disney artist Amy Mebberson announced that her SDCC commissions are now closed. If you want anything from her, you’ll have to stop by her booth on the Exhibit Room floor.
