Yo ho, yo ho, it’s a pirate’s panel for thee. More than 300 years after Blackbeard, Anne Bonny, and Mary Read sailed into history, pirates are still plundering their way through pop culture, from Black Sails and Pirates of the Caribbean to One Piece and beyond.
But how did real-life pirates become the swashbuckling scallywags we know today? San Diego Comic-Con attendees will be treated to a panel for “From Blackbeard to Netflix: Pirates in Modern Media”, which will chart a course through pirate history and mythology, exploring how tales from the high seas have inspired some of the biggest films, television series, books, comics, and video games.
Attendees will hear from Black Sails star Zach McGowan, One Piece and Black Sails director Lukas Ettlin, Pirates of the Caribbean Isaac C. Singleton Jr., as well as Dr. Rebecca Simon (Why We Love Pirates) and Dr. Mark Hanna (San Diego Maritime Museum).
Together, in a conversation led by moderator and author Bryan Cantrell (Pirates of the Wild West), they’ll separate fact from legend, share behind-the-scenes tales from their own voyages through pirate entertainment, and dig into why audiences still can’t resist a good ol’ fashioned scallywag.
