MTV and mtvU’s first ever Fandom Awards presentation will be taking place at San Diego Comic-Con, in the middle of MTV’s Fan Fest Thursday night party at Petco Park, but now, everyone can join in on the action. The studio currently has voting up for various fandom awards, including “Ship of the Year”, “Breakout Fandom Of The Year”, and more — but the ultimate prize is the just announced “Fandom of the Year” Award.
Voting for the award, which is meant to honor the most passionate fans and their fandom, launched today. There are 32 nominees, spread out across four sub-genres — Movies, TV Dramas, TV Comedies, and Animation — and they will battle it out in an “epic bracket for online voting”. There can be only one.
“The ‘Fandom of the Year’ award is the ultimate celebration of the biggest fandoms in pop culture,” said Ryan Kroft, mtvU Fandom Awards’ Executive Producer. “We’re thrilled to honor more than two dozen fandoms through an innovative bracket unlike anything we’ve seen in another awards show.”
Nominees range from the biggest blockbuster franchises like Captain America, X-Men, and The Hunger Games to the most passionate fandoms in TV, including Community, Supernatural, Teen Wolf, Breaking Bad, Sherlock, and more. No matter what side of fandom you fall on, you can make your voice heard. The award will be handed to the final winner at the mtvU Fandom Awards at Comic-Con, where musical guests Linkin Park and G-Eazy will be playing for attendees in a night full of music, free food, and fun. The event is free and open to all badgeholders.
Fans can also now vote for the “Best Fandom Forever” Award, presented with Tumblr. The nominees in that category include Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Doctor Who, Sherlock, and Batman. Starting today, MTV will launch a unique post for each of the “Best Fandom Forever” nominees on the MTV Tumblr page, with the winner determined by the post with the largest note count.
“Tumblr fandoms are the most passionate communities of our platform, and I can’t wait to see how they congregate to lift their favorites to the award stage,” said Sima Sistani, Director of Media and Entertainment.
