The fall schedule just got a little scary. And we mean that in a good way. The CW’s Cult is about a journalist, played by Matt Davis (The Vampire Diaries), who investigates a popular television show that may just be driving its fans to murder. The series pilot premiered on Preview Night in Ballroom 20 to positive buzz, and we had the opportunity to speak to the cast and crew on what we might expect from it’s upcoming season.

The show-within-a-show premise is an update on the genre shows of the past. “We love the idea of…creating a type of storytelling that really hasn’t been told,” says producer Len Goldstein. “To be able to have those two shows play off each other, to take people on a ride that is both scary and entertaining, and a little bit self-aware.”

Goldstein said the script was written by Rockne S. O’Bannon (Farscape) about the same time shows like The X-Files and FreakyLinks were declining in popularity. “This script had come about many years ago, probably while that cycle was in its last gasp. I think that the time has just come around again…to embrace that type of tone. Everything moves in cycles and right now it feels like it’s time to do that but update it. Those shows were terrific shows and obviously an influence, but hopefully we feel we can tap into something that hasn’t been done exactly this way yet.”

Watch stars Matt Davis and Robert Knepper, and producer Rockne S. O’Bannon talk about Cult in the video above. The show is current slated on The CW’s 2012-2013 mid-season schedule.
