Welcome to the GeekShot Photo Exclusive Series. This will be a regularly recurring post featuring cool, interesting, or just plain awesome moments we have captured during San Diego Comic-Con and WonderCon over the years. Each post will include a photo by Beth or James of GeekShot Photography. We may include a short story about the photo, but sometimes we’ll just let the photo speak for itself.
About This Photo
The Superman statue at Heroes Park outside the Omni Hotel during San Diego Comic-Con 2016.
On my trek over to the pedestrian bridge for a convention center shot, I decided to stop by the Batman v Superman offsite near the Omni Hotel. While the operating hours were over, they kept the lights on the statue. I decided to set up for a multi-exposure HDR and did a couple shots to test the lighting and figure out where I wanted to put the camera for the HDR. This shot was one of those initial shots. I’m likely to never bother with the 7 exposures I took for the HDR since this one came out so well.
Here’s the original unedited version so you can see what I did to bring out the photo the way I wanted.
I played with levels, contrast, and clarity for the most part. I wanted to have the lighting resemble the blue, red, and yellow of Superman’s costume as much as possible so I also adjusted the temperature and hue a bit. I also cropped and rotated it slightly so the left arm didn’t look weird getting cut off. Sometimes just a few edits here and there brings out what you envision for a photo.
What surprise photos have you taken while testing for other shots? Let us know in the comments.
