“The Vampire Lestat”‘s New Single “Butterscotch Bitch” is His Best Yet

AMC has released a new single ahead of The Vampire Lestat, premiering on AMC and AMC+ on June 7, and it’s a more interesting piece of work than a promotional drop has any right to be.

For those not in the know, this is the upcoming third season of the series formerly titled Interview with the Vampire — and the title change is a signal, that this is a whole new look and tone for the series, as we turn up the volume on our favorite vampires. If the first two seasons were Louis recounting his story, this one belongs to Lestat’s side of things. He’s heading out on an electric multi-city tour, while being haunted by “muses” from his wild and rebellious past. As his band’s star power climbs, so does his influence over vampires and humans alike.

And you can’t be a rock star without rock music, which is why leading up to this season, AMC has been slowly rolling out singles from the upcoming season (and will also be hosting a one-night only live concert and premiere screening event in New York City on June 2). The latest single, “Butterscotch Bitch,” is now streaming on major digital music services, including Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music.

It’s also the most impressive song yet, and sounds like it was built to be blasted on a car stereo, screaming lyrics about your ex you might still be in love with, and that’s the point. Of course an immortal being like Lestat has always wanted to be radio.

Actor Sam Reid’s vocals are perfectly suited for this track. Composer Daniel Hart (The Green Knight, Mother Mary), who’s scored the series since its first season, has written a song that allows Reid room to really shine here. Reid delivers the lyrics with a magnetic, swaggering confidence that feels unmistakably Lestat, but he also injects just enough desperation to hint at the loneliness underneath the performance. His voice has a natural rock-star quality to it: rich, theatrical, and slightly dangerous, and that makes it easy to believe that Lestat could captivate both obsessed fans and an immortal lover with equal intensity.

Of the new single, Daniel Hart said, “‘Butterscotch Bitch’ is, I hope, the song that feels the most like Lestat, as it’s the song I wrote with the most knowledge of Lestat under my belt to date. And why not end the songwriting with a song that Lestat wrote about himself? He is, after all, The Lestat-iest Lestat that’s ever Lestat-ed.”

And, not to be outdone, to quote the Vampire Lestat himself, “‘Butterscotch Bitch’ is, I hope, the song that feels the most like Daniel Hart, as it’s the song he wrote on a toilet in between vegan burritos and sessions for his Mother Mary score. May it find a home on Anne Hathaway’s rescue dog grooming playlist.”
