Under the Tents 2024: Marc Bernardin, Vampiro, IGN, Rob Liefeld

My daughter wished me a happy Halloween as I was writing this edition of Under the Tents. When I asked her why, she said that all the summer holidays are over, so the next major holiday will be Halloween (I guess Labor Day doesn’t count). I replied, “We still have San Diego Comic-Con to look forward to, and that’s our Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s all at once.” With that being said, we have lots of “holiday” news, including announcements from Marc Bernardin, Rob Liefeld, and a lot more.

Here’s a look at what you might have missed:

  • One of the entertainment industry’s most prolific writers had some good news and bad news to share. Yes, he will be at San Diego Comic-Con this year. No, he will not be recording a new Fatman Beyond episode with Kevin Smith this year. Mixed emotions, to be sure.

  • In case you were wondering where to find Abominable Toys SDCC-themed Treasures and Titans at the con this year, illustrator Tom Whalen and artist Dave Perillo each let their Instagram followers know their merch will be at 7 Bucks a Pop’s Booth #4945 as well as Plastic Empire’s Booth #4738 for $69.

  • Everybody’s gonna be kung-fu fighting at the 27th Annual Superhero Kung Fu Extravaganza panel that’s returning to Comic-Con this year. Seriously, kids, don’t try this stuff at home. It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye (then it’s a hockey match).

  • Fun fact: The first coal deposits in the United States were discovered in Pennsylvania. Something else you can discover in Pennsylvania is Convention History’s pin celebrating their project’s span from 1939 in New York to 2024 in San Diego. Don’t worry; they’re bringing these to SDCC, too, at Small Press Table #L-04 under Con Artist Comics.

  • East County Magazine‘s review of San Diego author KC Grifant’s latest work, Shrouded Horror: Tales of the Uncanny, reported that we’ll find the local author at SDCC this year on Saturday, July 26, where she’ll be participating in a panel as well as signing copies of her work.

  • “We’re the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. Where you go, we go.” Gear up for your next away mission at Hero Within’s SDCC Booth #1943, where you can pre-order this Next-Gen inspired jacket.

  • If you’re one of the majority who couldn’t score a Comic-Con badge this year or just can’t make it to the con, IGN reports that they will have you covered once again as they live-stream from SDCC this year. Watch IGN’s sites on Friday, July 26 and Saturday, July 27 at 3pm PT for their live coverage of pop culture’s biggest event.

  • Red 5 Comics is goin’ in. Into exclusives, that is. They’re bringing SDCC variant covers for two of their titles: the post-apocalyptic adventure The Last Harlemite #1 and the darkly gothic Enigmatown #1. They’re only bringing 150 copies of the Enigmatown cover, so grab yours before it runs off with some poor child’s soul.
  • Booher? I don’t even know her! No, artist David Booher and colleague Drew Zucker managed to pull off something few artists can – maintain complete control of how their work is released. Their SDCC variant cover for Dark Horse Comics’ Canto: A Place Like Home #1 will drop on their WhatNot link on Friday, July 26, but you can also find them in-person during Comic-Con at Dark Horse’s Booth #2615 where you can pick up one of only 500 prints made.

  • One of these things is not like the other (that’s why they’re exclusive variants, Andy). More Great Art will have these two SDCC-exclusive variants of Kaare Andrews’ Spider-Man: Reign #1 at Booth #4500/4401 available raw, signed, remarqued, and CGC graded.
  • You’ll have to be faster than Steve McQueen to get to Adi Granov Illustration’s Booth #5557 to find one of only 100 copies of Granov’s SDCC exclusive Le Mans printed and signed by the artist.

  • Avengelyne! Avengelyne! Rob Liefeld (you might have heard of him) is celebrating the 30th anniversary of his angelic hero with SDCC-exclusive 30th anniversary cover variants, including this brilliant design from legendary cover artist Shannon Maer.

  • SNIKT! SNIKT! We have some of the most talented readers on the planet, and “Capt Cash” is no exception with his hand-painted Deadpool & Wolverine charms he’s handing out at Comic-Con this year. Just look for “Marvel Jesus” around the con.

  • Fans and friends (and, of course, cosplayers) of the manga classic Soul Eater are invited to their cosplay meet-up just outside the Marriott Bayfront on Saturday, July 27 at 2:00pm PT.

  • Fans eagerly awaiting the release of Critical Entertainment’s Dual Animals Anthology won’t have much longer to wait. The first title in the series, Deep Space Top Off #1, will be available for the first time at Booth #4014 during Comic-Con this year along with free trading cards.

  • Australian artist Jackson Casperz has created an SDCC exclusive poster featuring Deadpool and Wolverine set against a Japanese-style background that will only be available at Booth #5603. Only 50 copies of the 20″x30″ poster will be for sale at the con for $88 each, so get there as soon as you can.

  • Plastic Empire Collectibles announced their SDCC exclusive Bomber Jimmy variant, a limited edition of 150 of the 8″ colorway designed by 8PM that will be available at Booth #4738 during Comic-Con this year.

  •
  • Squad up and head over to the Marriott Grand Ballroom 6 on Thursday, July 25 at 6:30pm PT for the premiere screening of the animated short Force5: Welcome to the Boom Squad during the SDCC International Film Festival.
