Under the Tents 2024: Exploding Kittens, Masked Republic, BeKyoot, DSTLRY

Long weekends were made for catching up on San Diego Comic-Con news, and we have plenty for you to brush up on. From panels (so many panels!), an explosive offsite at the Interactive Zone, art both cute and ghoul-ish, and more, we have plenty of updates for you from your favorite artists, authors, publishers, and beyond.

Let’s take a look at the news you might have missed:

  • The Oatmeal, otherwise known as Matthew Inman and his world of comics, games, and beyond, is promising a cat-astrophic good time at San Diego Comic-Con this year. His popular card game, Exploding Kittens, is being turned into a Netflix animated series, with the purr-miere set for July of 2024. That makes it perfect timing for the con, and a meow-sive sized promo. Which is exactly what Inman looks to be delivering, as he showed off what is clearly a super-sized version of one of the characters from the game/series, and revealed that he will have a “20 foot tall furry booth at Petco Park”. That presumably means a presence at the Petco Interactive Zone. He will also be on a panel, though details are still to be revealed for what, and if it’s related to the TV show or not. Start sharpening your claws (and your card skills).

  • BeKyoot has been busy prepping for San Diego Comic-Con, but isn’t too wiped out to show you their new booth topper standee. Don’t flush away your opportunity to visit them at Booth #3157.

  • Comic illustrator Sean Von Gorman teased (literally) that Magma Comix will be heading to San Diego Comic-Con, and their budget might even be bigger than two quarters and a pack of chewing gum. Magma, an independent publisher committed to empowering comic creators and their creator-owned passion projects, made their pop culture convention debut at WonderCon earlier this year with an exclusive, signings, and more. So all kidding aside, we’re excited to see what Magma has planned for SDCC.

  • Artist Bobby Breed showed off some raw pencil and ink pages from Issue #7 of Genesis II, which will be premiering at San Diego Comic-Con.

  • Masked Republic, a merchandising and media organization focused on Lucha Libre, revealed that you won’t have to wait too much longer to find out more about their SDCC 2024 plans.

  • Artist Malia Ewart, otherwise known as Malia Doodles, has three new Fallout charms planned for the con, starting with this one of The Ghoul and Dogmeat.

  • Star Trek fashion brand Hero Within showed off a sneak peek of their new exclusive logo. Stay tuned for more information.

  • Erica Schultz, writer of Rat City, Black WidowDaredevil, and more, is heading to sunny San Diego this July, and is available for panels.

  • Speaking of panels, we have even more panel news to share with you, including that Rachel Leishman, Assistant Editor of The Mary Sue and Podro Pascal podcast co-host, will be presenting a panel called “The Mary Sue: Unpacking the Female Characters in Nerdom”.

  • The Fangirl Diaries author Erica Victoria Espejo will also be presenting a panel at the con featuring her upcoming book, with more details still to be revealed.

  • We love seeing excited panel acceptances, and Mark R. Martell, PhD just couldn’t wait to share that his panel has been accepted.

  • Yvonne Renne Hunt also shared some news about her confirmed panel, “Deaf Representation in Pop Culture”. The panel will tentatively be conducted in ASL and interpreted into English for the hearing people in the audience.

  • Not just any English in San Diego is heading to the con this year — The English in San Diego is coming. Leonard Sultana announced on Facebook that his panel for SDCC 2024 has been accepted.

  • You can join Critical Entertainment for their panel “Writing Comics for Film and Television”, where you’ll learn more about the unique challenges of making comics ready for the film industry. Outside of the panel, you can find them on the show floor at Booth #4014.

  • And finally (for now), Astra Fauna – Sarah Dahlinger announced a panel on “Brushes & Dice: The Artistry Behind Tabletop Games” alongside Ross Thompson.

  • One person you won’t be seeing at SDCC this summer? Comic book artist Freddie E. Williams II, who confirmed he sadly won’t be making the trek to San Diego in July because he’s too busy.
